Canada India Foundation
(CIF) made two major announcements at a press conference held on February 24 at
the Ontario Investment and Trade Centre in Toronto. CIF named Infosys Executive
Chairman, Mr. Narayana Murthy as the 5th recipient of the CIF
Chanchlani Global Indian Award. CIF also announced its 4th theme
forum, the Canada India Infrastructure Forum, which will take place in Ottawa
and Toronto on April 23 and April 24-25 respectively.
Senator Asha Seth was among
prominent dignitaries who participated in the announcement event. A former
member of CIF, she congratulated CIF for highlighting accomplishments of
prominent people of Indian origin and also bringing a policy perspective to
strengthening of relations between Canada and India. Ontario MPP, Todd Smith
was joined by fellow MPPs Doug Holyday and Gila Martow, in recognizing CIF’s
contributions to relations between Canada and India and its upcoming
initiatives.
Mr.
Narayana Murthy has been described by Time Magazine as the Father of Indian IT
sector, and as one of the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time by Fortune magazine.
He founded Infosys in 1981 and served as its CEO from 1981 to 2002 and as
chairman from 2002 to 2011, guiding the company to become a multinational
corporation and leader of India’s software revolution. Murthy is the recipient
of Padma Vibhushan,
India’s second-highest civilian award by the Government of India, and has
also been honoured by the governments of France and United Kingdom.
As the fifth recipient of
the Award, Narayana Murthy joins a select company of the Award recipients
including Deepak Chopra, renowned thinker, writer and speaker on human
empowerment, Sam Pitroda, pioneer of India’s telecom revolution, Tulsi Tanti,
trailblazer in the deployment of wind power and Ratan Tata, India’s most
respected industrialist and philanthropist.
Mr. Murthy will
receive the Award at the CIF Award Gala, to be held on April 26 at the Westin
Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto. “The Award will be presented at one of the
most anticipated events of the year, the CIF Award Gala. “The Gala has been
graced in previous years by prominent leaders including The Right Honourable
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and India’s former President Dr. Abdul
Kalam.” said Laj Prasher, National
Convenor, CIF. The Gala will be co-chaired by Dr. Terry Papneja and Anil Shah.
“Canada
India Infrastructure Forum 2014 is the fourth forum that CIF has organized to
shine the light on business opportunities in the Canada-India corridor, after
Energy (2009), Mining & Metals (2010) and Agriculture and Food Processing
(2012)”, said Dr. V.I. “Lucky” Lakshmanan, Chair of CIF. “More than 150 speakers, including ministers from
Canadian federal government and provinces, India’s Planning Commission members
and central cabinet secretaries and CEO’s from Canadian and Indian private
sector have addressed CIF’s previous Canada India Forums and the high caliber
participation will continue at the Infrastructure Forum as well”, added Marc
Kealey, Co-Chair of the Forum.

Infrastructure Forum is being organized in cooperation with Carleton
University, Ottawa, ON. “Carleton University’s Canada India Centre for
Excellence is proud to be partnering with CIF in hosting the Infrastructure
Forum”, said Dr. Roseann Runte, President of Carleton University in a
communication. “CIF is to be commended for showing leadership in conceiving and
organizing the series of Canada India forums, paving the foundation for a
policy framework that would facilitate increased bilateral trade between Canada
and India” she added.
