 Ontario Seeking Input on Lower Rates for Payday Loans

Province Strengthening Consumer Protection for Borrowers

Ontario is seeking public input on how much borrowers should pay for a payday loan in the province.

In Ontario, the maximum cost of borrowing for a payday loan is currently $21 per $100 borrowed. This is the second lowest cost of borrowing in Canada, but ranks among the highest when compared to other North American jurisdictions. 

The government has issued a report to consult on the current total cost of borrowing a payday loan and three proposed alternatives:

• $15 per $100 borrowed
• $17 per $100 borrowed
• $19 per $100 borrowed.

Starting today, Ontarians can provide feedback by going online until May 20, 2016.

This consultation will help inform important work underway on proposed legislation introduced in December 2015 made under the Alternative Financial Services Statute Law Amendment Act. If passed, the act would increase consumer protections for users of payday loans, instalment loans, rent-to-own services, cheque cashing services and consumers with debts in collection by proposing longer grace periods for repayment or caps on borrowing rates.

Improvements Completed At Square One GO Bus Terminal  

Ontario Invested $6.5 Million in Upgrades

Metrolinx has completed improvements to the Square One Bus Terminal that will make it easier for customers to take GO Transit. The announcement was made at an event held on the  terminal on March 31^st and attended by Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca, MPP Dipika Damerla (Mississauga East-Cooksville), Mayor Bonnie Crombie, and Bruce McCuaig, President and CEO, Metrolinx. The upgraded terminal now features a new station building to better serve customers and meet growing demand. The building includes three GO service windows, accessible public washrooms and a climate-controlled waiting area. Other improvements to the terminal include:

Liberal borrowing won’t create jobs, and means higher taxes in Alberta – Deepak Obhrai

(Calgary) The Liberals are borrowing and spending tens of billions of taxpayer dollars, and to pay the bill, they are raising taxes on families, workers and job-creating businesses, says the Hon. Deepak Obhrai, Member of Parliament for Calgary Forest Lawn.  The reckless Liberal plan simply grows the size of government and will do nothing to actually create jobs, according to the MP.

On Tuesday March 22^nd, the Liberals introduced their 2016 federal budget. The Budget confirms that the Liberals are raising taxes on families, youth and small businesses. Despite spending nearly $30 billion in borrowed money, the Liberal budget has no clear plan to help get unemployed Canadians back to work.

Ontario is making progress to expand Highway 427, which will create jobs and support economic growth and development.

The province has released a request for proposals to three shortlisted bidders to extend Highway 427 by 6.6 kilometres (km) from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive. The highway will also be widened for about 4 km south of Albion Road to Highway 7. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and the road will be open to traffic in 2020.

High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lane infrastructure will be included in the construction work. A 15.5 km stretch of dedicated HOT lanes with electronic tolling in both directions on Highway 427, from south of Highway 409 to north of Rutherford Road, will open in 2021.

Expanding Highway 427 is part of the largest infrastructure investment in Ontario’s history — about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals. In 2015, the province announced support for more than 325 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life.

QUICK FACTS

§  A request for qualifications issued in July 2015 shortlisted the top three teams based on their construction capability, experience, qualified personnel and financial capacity to deliver a project of this size and scope.

§  The three teams short-listed to respond to a request for proposals for the project are: Blackbird Infrastructure Group, 427 Link-PAW and Link 427-AM.

§  Ontario’s population is expected to increase by approximately 40 per cent by 2041, placing additional importance on having modern infrastructure.

§  This summer, the province is conducting a HOT lanes pilot project on the existing High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) section of the QEW from Trafalgar Road in Oakville to Guelph Line in Burlington.
