FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 1, 2016 Theatre Passe Muraille presents the second annual Ultimate Theatre Championship A three-day theatre event culminating with the TPM Gala Toronto, ON – Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) will present a "theatrical" event like no other. They will be transforming the Mainspace into a UFC-style cage arena for the second annual Ultimate Theatre Championship, a three-day theatre event culminating with the TPM Gala fundraiser and "Heavyweight" title matches. What happens when you combine the thrill of fight night with the finesse of Canada's greatest actors? The Gladiators of Canadian theatre, television and comedy meet face-to-face in the Ultimate Theatre Championship to determine this country's greatest "welterweight", "middleweight" and "heavyweight" actors. Bare-knuckle monologues, grudge-match scene work and nail-biting stage combat will keep you on the edge of your seat. Two actors enter the cage, but only one will "exeunt" - the UTC will ignite your theatrical bloodlust! Created and hosted by Rebecca Northan, inspired by the UFC, this is a unique theatre experience showcasing the talent and diversity of Toronto's artists. Actors are paired up according to their division for a series of rounds in an all-out theatrical duel. The matches will occur onstage within a "caged" octagon, made to appear like a UFC bout. Guest judges, MC's providing colour commentary, contestant "smack-talking", hot dogs and popcorn are all part of the experience. HOSTED BY: Rebecca Northan & last year's "Heavyweight" Champion Richard Greenblatt. REFEREE: Tyler Rive Thursday, April 9th – Welterweights… Keep your eye on these talents! Joseph Recinos VS Virgilia Griffith Viktor Lukawski VS Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster Friday, April 10th - Middleweights... You know them, you love them! Bahia Watson VS Akosua Amo-Adem Aurora Browne VS Ali Kazmi Saturday, April 11th - Heavyweights - TPM GALA… Bastions of Canadian talent! Alan Van Sprang VS Sugith Varughese Maev Beaty VS Grace Lynn Kung How a match works: 3 Round, Undercard Fight: Round 1 – A Monologue Round 2 - The Cold Read! Actors are surprised with a scene. Watch them make acting choices on the fly and work together. Round 3 - The "Free" Round – Actors can do anything they want to show of their unique skills! 5 Round, Title match: All of the above plus TWO more rounds: Round 4 - Anything musical! Round 5 - An improvised, slow-motion stage fight, extreme danger in super slow-mo! Each fight judged by a panel of celebrity and industry judges: media stars, theatre stars, and last year's UTC champions. "Last year was our first UTC. The audiences came, they cheered and after experiencing an event like no other, they vowed to return. Don't miss your chance this year to watch as actors enter the "octagon of pain" with only one "action" in mind – to crush their acting opponent and to emerge in triumph. May the best ego win." – Andy McKim – Artistic Director, Theatre Passe Muraille "Last year's Ultimate Theatre Championship turned out better than I could have imagined! An exciting and unusual showcase of Toronto's top theatre performers, it was a buffet of talent & entertainment. Moving, comedic, surprising. What a thrill to see so many genius performers climb into the cage together! I can't wait to see what the new match-ups bring this year." – Rebecca Northan - Creator 'I walk softly and carry a big script Van Sprang' – Sugith Varughese, Heavy Weight Competitor "On stage. Back stage. In the wings... I'm coming for Sugith!!!" – Alan Van Sprang, Heavy Weight Competitor Theatre Passe Muraille gratefully acknowledges support of Secutor Capital (Record Holder Sponsor), Trisura (Title Holder Sponsor), Delaney Capital, Creative Post and Radke Films (Champion Sponsors for the Ultimate Theatre Championship, as well as Season Sponsor BMO Financial Group for their ongoing support and 2015.16 Accessibility Sponsor TD Bank Group.
