Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on World Autism Awareness Day

Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on World Autism Awareness Day

The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on World Autism Awareness Day:
"April 2nd marks World Autism Awareness Day, providing an opportunity to raise awareness and supports for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
ASD describes a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, each with its own set of challenges and treasures. In Ontario, it has been estimated that 1 in 68 eight year old children fall on the autism spectrum.

The Ontario PC Caucus firmly believe that those living with autism should not be defined by it – empowering individuals, families and communities is paramount to an effective autism strategy. We support the principles of inclusion and opportunity.
The Government has the responsibility to help ensure individuals with autism can realize their full potential – providing social supports to help families overcome the unique challenges of raising a child with ASD. The decisions a government make on this file have a profound impact on all affected families.
In Ontario, there are far too many families and children stuck on waiting lists for the support they need and deserve. A solution is required, and it must be based on extensive consultation and evidence, with an emphasis on early-detection and treatment.
We in the Ontario PC Caucus look forward to working with affected parties to help those living with autism to succeed."
