09/03/2016, Brampton, Ontario – Ms. Sahota, Member of Parliament for Brampton North, applauded today’s announcement that Canada will welcome a greater number of immigrants in 2016 —with a special emphasis on family reunification. “Family reunification is a core immigration priority for Canada because it supports the integration of immigrants, and contributes to Canada’s social, cultural, and economic development – including right here in Brampton North,” said Ms. Sahota. “Our country has a proud tradition of welcoming immigrants, like my parents, and yesterday’s announcement by Minister McCallum embodies that.”
The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable John McCallum, announced the Government of Canada’s ambitious plan to bring in between 280,000 and 305,000 new permanent residents in 2016. Our government’s plan will reduce the backlog and processing times in multiple programs – especially in the Family Class – by processing more applications and admitting more permanent residents. As we continue to show our global leadership, Canada will reunite families, offer a place of refuge to those fleeing persecution, and support Canada’s long-term economic prosperity. “This is the highest number of projected immigrant admissions put forth by the Government of Canada in modern times,” said Ms. Sahota. “Our government’s plan outlines a shift in immigration policy that works for our country’s middle class, reflects our Canadian values, and demonstrates the strength of our diversity, both here in Brampton North and from coast-to-coast-to-coast.”
