PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER ANNOUNCES GOVERNOR GENERAL STATE VISIT TO INDIA

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will travel to India from February 22 to March 2, 2014.
During his visit, the Governor General will meet with heads of state, senior government officials, business leaders and civil society, with a view to strengthening bilateral relations including commercial and educational ties.
Canada and India have longstanding bilateral relations built on shared values of democracy and pluralism, as well as close cooperation within the Commonwealth and the United Nations. In recent years, both countries have worked to enhance bilateral relations in several areas, including commerce, security, education, energy, science and technology, culture, and agriculture.

  • India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Our countries are committed to tripling bilateral trade to $15 billion annually. To help achieve this, negotiations for a Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement are underway.   
  • Prime Minister Harper travelled to India for official visits in November 2012 and November 2009. Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, visited Canada in June 2010.
