CIMA Canada today announced its plans for the seventh annual CIMA Mayor’s Trophy to be held on the 25th June 2011, a t the Sunnybrook Park in Toronto. CIMA has extended official invitations to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to be the Chief Guest at the event and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and MPP Christine Elliott as special guests representing the Federal and Provincial governments. A school cricket tournament initiated by Councillor Doug Ford will also be held at the Summerlea Park in Etobicoke on the June 11th and June 18th, as a preliminary event leading up to the Mayor’s Trophy. The school cricket tournament will feature West end schools competing with East end schools for the inaugural Mayor’s School Cricket Trophy.
The CIMA Board officials have met with Mayor Rob Ford, Councillor Doug Ford and MPP Christine Elliott to discuss plans for the upcoming Mayor’s Trophy cricket event. “CIMA Canada is thrilled to continue our partnership with the City of Toronto and our corporate sponsors to make the CIMA Canada Mayor’s Trophy 2011 a reality,” said Mr. Amal Ratnayake, Deputy President of CIMA. “MPP Christine Elliott and Minister Flaherty have been very supportive of CIMA community initiatives and we look forward to welcoming them as special guests at the Mayor’s Trophy” .
CIMA partnered with the Access & Diversity Unit of the Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation to launch Toronto Annual Celebration of Cricket – CIMA Mayor’s Trophy in 2005. The event uses cricket as a vehicle to bring Toronto’s vastly diverse communities together and helps raise funds for Cricket Across The Pond Scholarships (CAP). CAP aims to reach out to youth from Toronto's diverse communities through cricket and create role models in our communities. Over the last three years, CAP has provided young Toronto cricketers with the leadership and communications skills and an opportunity to learn life skills as ambassadors of Toronto in England. CAP scholarship program is also supported by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) UK. As members of the Toronto Mayor’s Cricket Team, the young Torontonians were given the opportunity to visit Lord’s Cricket Grounds in the UK to learn the history and heritage of cricket. The CAP program has had a tremendous impact on youth in our communities and has helped inspire young Torontonians towards positive pursuits in life.
