Trade relations with India a priority: Peter Van Loan

Mississauga, September 14: The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, today spoke to members of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce and Brampton’s Indian business community about the Harper government’s commitment to growing Canada’s trade relationship with India.

“Canada’s trade and investment partnership with India is on an exciting path—one that holds great promise for both countries as we continue toward lasting economic recovery,” said Minister Van Loan. “Our government has made India a key priority in Canada’s foreign and trade policy agenda.”

Minister Van Loan said that he looks forward to welcoming India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Anand Sharma, to Canada in the next few weeks. This is the first meeting of the two ministers since the prime ministers announced their commitment to an annual dialogue on trade and investment.

Earlier, Vinay Nagpal, President, Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, while addressing the gathering said, “Canada and India have embarked upon a new path of building strong bilateral ties in recent months. Prime Minister Stephan Harper’s visit to India last November and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Canada in June have emphasized economic relations as the bedrock of stronger ties between our two democracies.”

On behalf of the Chamber, Nagpal acknowledged and applauded the Minister’s role in directing the bilateral relations between Canada and India into a new direction. “We firmly believe that the soon to be formalized Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Canada and India will take bilateral trade to $15 billion annually,” he added.

Preeti Saran, Consul General for India in Toronto, also reiterated the Indian government’s commitment to strengthen bilateral relations in all spheres, including cultural and explained that it was this renewed understanding between the two nations that has led to the concept of celebrating 2011 as the Year of India in Canada.

Harjit S. Kalsi, the Chamber’s Vice President, welcomed the members to the event and gave a broad overview of the Chamber’s plan for 2010-11.
