Join us in celebration of Recipe Placemat Project, an innovative community initiative!
Friday, December 16, 11:30 - 1:30 pm Glass Pavilion at Mississauga Celebration Square 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga, Ontario L5B 3C1
As part of the AGM's community engagement programming, Recipe Placemat Project has been developed as a series of four workshops, held in October and November 2016, with community partner Catholic Crosscultural Services (CCS). Over 85 newcomer students in the CCS Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program in Mississauga participated! The hands-on workshops revolved around themes of legacy, history, ancestry and memory associated with food; meals shared with family and cherished recipes passed down from one generation to the next.
This project highlights the ritual of cooking dishes and the tastes and smells that bring back many memories and associations. Collecting favourite recipes from new community members is a great way to explore memories and storytelling through food that brings people together and connects a community.
The recipes, which have lovingly evolved into artworks by the project participants, will be on display at the Glass Pavilion in Mississauga Celebration Square on December 16, 2016.
This is a free community event. All are welcome! "The AGM, with the incredible support of the Catholic Crosscultural Services (CCS) in Mississauga and Whole Foods Market, have pushed the possibilities of storytelling and art practise associated with the preparation of food. Recipe Placemat Project was presented as part of the AGM's innovative Community Engagement Programme, providing free and inventive public programmes within the community that engage individuals in the creative process by presenting unique conduits of connection. This significant project engaged over 85 intergenerational new Canadians, representing 18 countries,13 languages and 74 unique stories, using food as the connector. Touching on issues of ancestry, perseverance and celebration, Recipe Placemat Project uncovered unexpected connections between food prepared in places separated by great distances, reminding us that despite our perceived differences, the language we all speak fluently is food."

First. New. Next. The AGM provides platforms for exhibitions, collections and experimentation in contemporary culture with a recent focus on artists and cultural producers from Indigenous, newcomer and youth communities. Through a broad range of educational programs, artist projects and other forms of critical dialogue, the AGM seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide spaces where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways. The AGM is proud to admit people free of charge, serve communities, and provide positive visual art experiences for all visitors.
