(Mississauga) - This May, in celebration of Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, the Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM) invites visitors to delve into the world of photography with two new exhibitions.
CANADIAN BELONGING(s), curated by Ellyn Walker, examines the nuanced and complex ways in which personal identity and feelings of belonging are shaped and negotiated within Canada's rich cultural tapestry. Artists Basil AlZeri, Sonny Assu, Pansee Atta, Cindy Blazević, Vanessa Dion Fletcher, Cheryl L'Hirondelle, Kristie MacDonald, Meryl McMaster, and Abdi Osman demonstrate their own unique relationships to the nation-state through distinct negotiations of material belongings. These artists speak back to dominant representations of national identity steeped in histories of colonialism and white supremacy, bringing their own unique perspectives to what it means to belong on this land.
In Instrumental, Mark Kasumovic's photographs of scientific instruments and facilities offer an investigation into how advances in technology have altered the previously symbiotic relationship of photography to the material world.
Members of the media and the public are invited to the Opening Reception on May 5, 6 pm, at the AGM. There will be a special performance by Basil AlZeri at 7 pm. A free bus will depart from The Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St W, Toronto) at 6 pm, returning at 8:30 pm. Space is limited and RSVP is required to agm.connect@mississauga.ca.
