The Lions Clubs of Mississauga invite you to support their annual Purina®
Walk for Dog Guides. The Walk attracts thousands of people and pets
each year to help raise money to support Lions Foundation of Canada Dog
Guides – a national organization in its 29th year of service that trains
six types of Dog Guides to assist Canadians with disabilities. The raising and training of each of the Guide Dog requires an investment of almost $25,000.
Diabetic Alert Dog Guides can be identified by their red harness.
This year’s Mississauga Walk for Dog Guides will take place at J.C. Saddington Park in Mississauga on Sunday May 25, 2014. Registration opens at 10 AM. Please help us raise funds so that more of the needy can have Dog Guides.
Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Newest Program - Diabetic Alert Dogs - Instituted in 2013
Diabetic Alert Dog Guides assist people aged 10 or older who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness. They are trained to detect sudden drops in their handler’s blood sugar through scent and alert them so that they can ingest something sweet. They also bark for help or activate an alert system if needed. Their ability to detect and react to hypoglycemic episodes helps their handler’s avoid loss of consciousness and subsequent life-threatening effects. Ultimately, these specially trained Dog Guides provide increased safety, security and independence.
