Exhibition of Contemporary Figurative Paintings by Claudio Ghirardo. This exhibition is possible by a grant from the Ontario Arts Council
"YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE"
Culture is people: Their interaction to their environment and adaptability to changing environment and surroundings represents attitudes and thinking. Inspired by likes of Goya, Daumier, and Toulouse Lautrec who commented on their times through people they encountered, Ghirardo focuses on the engagement of the human figure and the body’s relationship to its experiences. Professor Peter Larisey, an Art Historian at Regis College, term Ghirardo’s works as "Neo-Humanism" and relates it to the artists of the Renaissance and Middle Ages as they painted aspects of humanity in conjunction with their religious, cultural and social environment.

'You Are Who You Are' is about experiences within our present society: The Super Hero Icons series is an examination of the idealized heroic figure and kitsch and how they have become "Icons" in pop culture. Ying and Yang is an exploration of opposite experiences being part of our societal framework. Many paintings start out as sketches of people the artist has seen or met, in their natural surroundings. His figurative distortion, use of expressive brushstrokes brings about "the eye" that raises questions of action vs. reaction, thought vs. intuition, what you see vs. what you don't see.
