All
Markham and York Region residents and visitors are welcome to attend the Colour, In
Theory opening reception on January 26.
What: Opening Reception – everyone welcome to attend
When: Sunday, January 26, 2014
Where: Varley Art Gallery of Markham
Who: Members of Markham Council
Janet Read, York Region artist
All three exhibition spaces explore a different use of colour:
Main Gallery: A Study in Scarlet
Taking its cue from Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel of the same name, A Study in Scarlet links together artworks from the Varley Art Gallery permanent collection along one common thread — the colour red. While seemingly straightforward, the exhibition exposes the various shades one single colour can assume, and unravels its meaning as it travels through time and space.
Intro Gallery: Janet Read
Featuring works from her series Hem of the Sea, this exhibition highlights Read’s colourful atmospheric abstractions. This project is part of right here | right now, an initiative highlighting the work of artists from York Region.
Collections Gallery: The Varley Story & Colour, In Theory
With selections drawn from our permanent collection, this exhibitions serves as a chronological survey of F.H. Varley’s life and artistic practice. Also on view are works on loan from major public institutions that explore Varley’s use and understanding of colour. On view until January 11, 2015.
