“These organizations have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to youth,” says Akela Peoples, President and CEO of The Learning Partnership. “They have really gone above and beyond in how they engaged Grade 9 students before, during and after Take Our Kids to Work day.”
The Learning Partnership’s Canada’s Outstanding Employer Awards were established in 2011 as an extension of the organization’s Take Our Kids to Work program, now in its 19th year. Entries were judged on five criteria: Participant feedback about their Take Our Kids to Work day activities; how they promoted the importance of staying in school and pursuing post-secondary studies to students and the community; the amount of creativity and innovation in developing engaging and exciting activities for students on Take Our Kids to Work day; and how they supported and explained career choices and the benefits of early career exploration.
“We need more Canadian employers opening their doors to youth for co-op opportunities, for internships and for experiences like Take Our Kids to Work,” says Peoples. “This is the only way we can effectively provide youth with experiential learning opportunities about today’s workplace needs and expectations. It helps to prepare them for the future in a unique way.”
