MISSISSAUGA, ON – The Mississauga Arts Council’s Limelight Association of Young Artists is set to kick-off a special friendship with First Nations youth in Neskantaga, Ontario at its Thanksgiving Open Mic Night. Inspired by and in support of youth artists from Neskantaga First Nation, Limelight artists are creating new pieces, dedicating existing work and coming together through the arts in partnership with Neskataga.
All are welcome to attend this special event. The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) is thrilled to be teaming up with Whole Foods Market Square One to present this event hosted by professional singer/songwriter Natalie Muzos. Whole Foods Market Square One is located at 155 Square One Dr. in Mississauga. Local artists are welcome to come out and perform! All artists must call 905-615-4278 to reserve a spot.
For this special project, MAC was honoured to work collaboratively with MARTY Award-winning photographer Sherry Prenevost. A celebrated Canadian artist, Prenevost has a wealth of experience working with First Nations Youth. Prenevost generously donated her time to mentor youth on MAC’s Limelight Committee to bring this inspiring event to fruition. Performance footage of Mississauga’s Limelight Youth will be filmed and shared with youth in Neskantaga following the event.
“Our Open Mic is an event of expression, empowerment, hope and is a testament to the power of the arts in bringing together and changing worlds,” explains Prenevost. “The cultural vibrancy and emotional dexterity of this tiny northern community has been, and continues to be, plagued by conditions which can only be described as fourth world. Suicide rates are amongst the HIGHEST in the world. When Limelight artists became aware of the art and lived human experiences of fellow artists in Neskantaga, they were inspired. So inspired have been the youth of Limelight that they have created a very special event dedicated to the artists and community of Neskantaga.”
MAC would also like to extend a big thank you to event sponsor Whole Foods Market Square One for their support and encouragement.
