Over 300 Geared Up for Sixth Annual Giro Race
Markham, ON ~ August 12, 2013 ~ On Sunday, August 11, Markham kids rode their way to victory in the Sixth Annual Markham Giro Bike Race.

The City of Markham held this annual event to encourage children aged 3-14 to get outside, get active, and get cycling. With the growing popularity of the Giro event, the Honda Canada Headquarters served as the new location for the 3 kilometre course to accommodate more riders and their families.
“Markham’s Giro Bike Race is an important cycling outreach initiative for our community. It fosters appreciation for cycling as a sport and it teaches youth the importance of cycling safety,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

Mayor Scarpitti added, “Cycling is a great way to get around Markham. We’re an award-winning bicycle friendly community with a 160 kilometre network of bicycle routes that will eventually grow to 400 kilometres.”

“Honda is proud to call Markham home and we’re happy to offer our location for the Giro Bike Race,” said Jerry Chenkin, President and CEO of Honda Canada Inc. “This event is about fun and staying fit not to mention, competition on two wheels, which is a big part of Honda’s heritage.”

Markham’s WOW – Water on Wheels water trailer – were also at the event to refill reusable water bottles and to provide water education.

All racers received a t-shirt, a participation medal sponsored by Honda Canada and D’Ornellas Bike Shop, and ice cream. After the children’s races, there was a competitive race featuring the D'Ornella Racing Team adult riders. StarBuzzOnline.com
