Brampton, ON –Member of Parliament Parm Gill praised an announcement by Citizenship & Immigration Canada of the release of two new web videos designed to help newcomers to Canada prepare for their arrival & navigate the first few weeks in a new country.
“The first few weeks in a new country can be quite a culture shock,” said MP Gill. “By providing newcomers with practical advice and information before and as soon as they arrive, we can help make this process a little easier & assist them in integrating more quickly their new local community.”
The Before Arriving in Canada video recommends, amongst other advice, that newcomers bring all their personal identification documents with them and have all their official documents translated into English or French before coming to Canada. The Your First Two Weeks in Canada video explains many of the important steps that will be necessary early on, such as obtaining a Social Insurance Number, contacting a local settlement organization and finding employment.
The 10-minute videos are part of a series of tools designed by the Government of Canada to help immigrants get the best possible start in their new country. These tools include the new Welcome to Canada guide, which provides links to important contacts to assist new Canadians settle in Canada, and the Web-based tool Living in Canada, which provides users with a personalized settlement plan and identifies the closest service providers. Once newcomers are settled in Canada, the publication Discover Canada, serves as an official study guide to prepare for the Canadian citizenship test.
“Helping new Canadians settle more easily in their community benefits newcomers and the Canadian economy as a whole,” said MP Gill. “Our Government has tripled settlement funding since 2005-2006, and will continue to work to assist those who come to Canada in search of new opportunities.”
