Brampton, ON – Member of Parliament Parm Gill proudly expressed his support Tuesday for the creation of a new youth advisory council, the Brampton-Springdale Conservative Youth Association, to allow the youth of Brampton to have their voices heard and engage youth in the political process.“Youth are the grassroots and the next generation of politics in Canada,” said MP Gill. “This group will not only allow an opportunity for youth to get involved in politics, but will allow me to gain greater insight to the issues facing our youth today.”
Brampton-Springdale Conservative Youth Association coordinator, Shekar Kumar, sees the group as an important first-step for youth seeking to get involved in governance & politics.
“The council is a movement for youth by youth, and is about empowering youth to ‘be the change’ in their community,” said Kumar. “Council members will be encouraged to think big, speak up, and take meaningful, proactive action to help other youth across the riding.”
The organization will be comprised of a group of up to 30 total students, between the ages of 12 and 24, from the constituency, that are appointed every year via an application. These council members will have the opportunity to share their ideas and consult with the Member of Parliament, while engaging in volunteer activities throughout the riding.
“I applaud the hard work put forth by Shekar (Kumar) and others in establishing this organization, and look forward to consulting with them in the future on issues that matter to our youth,” said MP Gill.
The Brampton-Springdale Conservative Youth Association is scheduled to begin meetings in April, with meetings taking place on the first Saturday of every month. Participants will be eligible to receive volunteer hours to put towards the 40 hour requirement for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Members are required to purchase a membership with the Conservative Party of Canada in order to take part in events & association meetings.
