Minister Kenney Urges the Opposition to Stop Voting Against the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act

Ottawa, February 6, 2013 - The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, today called on NDP and Liberal Members of Parliament to stop opposing the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act as it reaches Third Reading - its final stage in the House of Commons before it proceeds to the Senate of Canada.
"I urge the NDP and Liberals to stop putting the interests of criminals ahead of the rights of victims and law-abiding Canadians," said Minister Kenney. "Bill C-43 will help protect the safety and security of Canadian families, and will strengthen the integrity of our immigration system."

By voting against the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act, the NDP and Liberals are ignoring the clear message from the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canadian Police Association, Victims of Violence, and Immigrants for Canada, among other organizations that strongly support this bill.

There are many examples of dangerous foreign criminals who have used the endless appeals currently available to avoid deportation for years - in some notable cases for more than 20 years.  In too many cases, while these foreign criminals remain in Canada, they continue to commit crimes and victimize more Canadians.

With the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act, dangerous foreign criminals would no longer have access to endless and redundant appeals.  The legislation would also make it harder for individuals who pose a risk to Canada to enter the country in the first place.

"Canada's doors are always open to those who play by the rules and seek to contribute in a positive way to our great country," said Minister Kenney. "But, with or without the support of the Opposition, our Conservative Government will continue to crack down on crime and will do what is necessary to keep our streets and communities safe."
