2012 Achievement and Civic Recognition Award Finalists Announced


Winners to be honoured on November 19, 2012

MARKHAM, ON ~ November 1, 2012 ~Join Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Members of Council and special guests at the 16th bi-annual Achievement & Civic Recognition Award (ACRA) Ceremony at the Flato Markham Theatre on Monday, November 19, 2012. This event recognizes Markham residents, businesses and organizations that have made unique and outstanding contributions by bringing recognition to Markham in the categories of Business/Corporate, Cultural, Community Service, Environmental, and Sports and Recreation.

 Eight finalists in five categories have been selected by the 2012 ACRA Committee from the numerous nominations received for this year’s awards. They are:
1.    Rebekah Boscariol (Lake Ontario swimmer raising funds for Sick Kids),
2.    Victoria Chan (visually impaired soprano singer),
3.    Kevin V. Huhn (industry leading authority in grass roots hockey),
4.    Lloyd Robertson (former chief anchor of CTV News),
5.    Hisan Shafaque (high-achieving student and volunteer),
6.    Gordon Stollery (Angus Glen community entrepreneur),
7.    River Wong (Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year recipient) and
8.    William Yan (national wushu athlete).

 “The City of Markham is fortunate to have so many outstanding individuals, businesses and organizations helping to make our community the best place to live, work and play,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We congratulate all those who were nominated, and in particular, the eight finalists for this year’s ACRA awards. Their contributions are invaluable and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”

“There were a number of outstanding individuals, groups and businesses nominated for the 2012 awards, and it was difficult to narrow the field to the eight finalists selected,” says Regional Councillor Gordon Landon, Chair of the ACRA Committee. “We look forward to celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of our nominees and announcing the overall winners of each category at the upcoming awards ceremony.”

The winner of each category will be announced and formally recognized at the November 19 event hosted by the ACRA Committee and the City of Markham.

The evening will begin with VIP and general receptions at 6:00 p.m., followed by the award ceremony at 7:00 p.m. There will also be performances by some of Markham’s finest talents. The event is open to all Markham residents, however, RSVP is required.
