StarBuzz, Toronto-Toronto, Ontario – The 13th Annual FILMI: Toronto’s South Asian Film Festival will be presented September 27th – 30th, 2012 at the Carlton Cinema. The vision of FILMI: Toronto’s South Asian Film Festival is to discover, introduce, promote and celebrate cinematic endeavours by talented South Asian filmmakers, and to highlight works with South Asian themes that can be brought to a mainstream audience. This year we will focus on two very active filmmakers; Mumbai’s Vipin Sharma and Canada’s own Ash Varma.
MASTER CLASS with Vipin Sharma – Sunday, September 30th, 2012, 4:00PM at Carlton Cinema - Filmi is proud to celebrate the works of Vipin Sharma. Vipin was a resident of Toronto and left Canada to make it in the indie movie scene for Mumbai. Vipin has starred in such popular films as ‘Like Stars on Earth (Taare Zameen Par)’, ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Shahid’ and ‘Calcutta Taxi’.
Opening Night Film – Canadian PREMIERE – ‘Gattu’– Filmi opens with this award winning film by Rajan Khosla ‘Gattu’. ‘Gattu’ is a heart warming story that follows the magical life of the orphan Gattu. Thursday September 27th, 2011, 7:00PM – Carlton Cinema.
13th FILMI: Toronto’s South Asian Film Festival will also feature:
FILMI Shorts Programme – Opening Night will have the Canadian Premiere of the Oscar nominated film ‘Raju’. Filmi also welcomes U.S.-Director Shilpa Sunthankar with her Canadian Premiere of ‘Company of Thieves’. Filmi’s featured shorts filmmaker is Ash Varma who has 3 films in Filmi with ‘Affection’, ‘Arranged’ and ‘Angraze Translation’. Filmi is now the premier festival that showcases world and Canadian premieres of future filmmakers from the South Asian Diaspora. September 29th, 2012, 4:00PM – Carlton Cinema
TORONTO PREMIERE – ‘Mallamall’ – by award-winning Producer/Director, Lalita Krishna looks at the impact of globalism through the lens of a nation trying to balance local consumer demand and foreign interests. September 28th , 2012 , 7:00PM – Carlton Cinema. Lalita Krishna will be available for Q&A.
FILMI Music Videos – Preceding each film premiere, FILMI 2012 will also be presenting world premieres of new music videos. This year’s Filmi will have World Premier’s by A SLAM’s “GO’ and the World Premiere of Mandeep Sethi ‘MOBILIZE’ - Filmi's 5th annual music video segment is programmed by Canadian music personality Raoul Juneja (a.k.a. Deejay Ra).
Closing Night Film – Canadian PREMIERE – “Runaway (Udhao)” – A beautifully shot film by by Amit Ashraf shot all on location in Bangladesh. A dubious rickshawalla named Babu has made it his life mission to find these runaways and force them to face their past. Filmi will have Amit Ashraf on hand for Q&A. Filmi Industry Series – “Making a Living as a South Asian Entertainer in Canada’ with 3 of our most accomplished South Asian writers, Ben Joseph, Atul Rao and Sugith Varughese, ‘A Panel with ACTRA’ discussing the advantages of being a member of the actors union. September 29th and 30th, 2012, 2:00PM, 30 Lounge and Carlton Cinema.
