“The latest violence against citizens protesting outside of the Prime Minister's office in Egypt is a great source of concern. Images of women being beaten in the streets and shots fired into crowds of protesters cannot be tolerated, and we must not see a repeat of the violence against the Coptic Christian community. The Liberal Party stands with the international community in condemning the excessive use of force. The Egyptian government and the military must take responsibility for their actions and show accountability in protecting its citizens. As the third and final round of electoral voting in Egypt draws closer, we hope that the military council will set a date for the presidential elections and work to move power to civilian authorities.
On behalf of the Liberal Party and our Parliamentary Caucus, I extend my condolences to the families of those who have been affected by the ongoing violence.”
