Industry Minister Paradis Set to Work With Revitalized Automotive Industry

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Windsor, Ontario, June 8, 2011—The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, today attended the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association Conference and Exhibition, where he discussed the government’s economic agenda and the opportunities that lie ahead for the automotive industry.

“Canada’s Economic Action Plan has helped create and maintain jobs and has helped firms modernize their operations. We will continue to strengthen our industries, such as auto parts manufacturing, with our low-tax plan to protect the economy, continued deductions for modernizing plants and facilities, and incentives for hiring new workers. The next phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan focuses on the things that matter most to Canadians: good jobs, security for our families and a prosperous future.
“Our government is working with President Obama and his administration to deliver on the shared vision for perimeter security and economic competitiveness. The two leaders also created the joint United States–Canada Regulatory Cooperation Council with the objective of helping to simplify and align regulations across the border where possible. We anticipate these new long-term partnerships will accelerate the legitimate flow of people and goods between both countries while strengthening security and economic competitiveness.”
The Minister also spoke about the unprecedented challenges the automotive industry faced during the economic downturn in 2008–09. The restructuring assistance the government provided helped prevent the disorderly collapse of one or more companies, including some in the parts sector. Without this assistance, there would have been potentially negative effects right across the auto industry.
“Both Chrysler and GM have repaid their loans, in full and ahead of schedule, to the governments of Canada and Ontario.
“With the restructuring of two of our key auto manufacturers and the worst of the recession behind us, the automotive industry, including its many important suppliers here today, is looking to the future.
“Now is the time to seize the opportunities that come with this upward momentum. The theme of this conference, ‘Capturing Opportunity in the Revitalized Automotive Sector,’ speaks to this moment.”
