‘Dum Maaro Dum’ (DMD) has dum but a little. Wondering what that means? Well, the movie works but in parts. Rohan Sippy does not tread far too off, remains in his comfort zone and brings to reel what he does the best - a tight-paced thriller with some real dazzling moments. Just that God’s own country is shown too much in a bad light - so, if you thought that Goa was all about sun-kissed beaches, shots of feni and partying till the wee hours of the morning know that DMD portrays a different Goa altogether. Also, the writing is lousy and bit haywire. The film goes on to introduce four characters and how their lives intersect. We have ACP Vishnu Kamath, a cop whose life mantra is ‘Goa ki safai’. Then we have Lorry, a topper desperate for a few extra greens to get a ticket to US. For the same, he makes a deal and becomes a carrier for the drug mafia. Next we have Zoe, an air-hostess who made the same mistake as Lorry and becomes a life-long prisoner and Joki, a musician and Zoe’s boyfriend who could not save her but attempts to make amends by saving Lorry.
Now that the premise is set, the action begins with Kamat, along with two of his most trusted aides, cleaning Goa’s drug-fuelled underbelly. What he doesn’t realize is that the task is not as easy as it looks, for there is a bad boy, the drug mafia, who spells fire out and chars anyone and everyone who come in between. The film is fast-pace with steamy action and thrilling sequences. Dialogues are a mixed bag – on occasions simply superb, while abysmal on others, especially post interval. One more aspect which is downright funny is that certain dialogues are blatant inspirations from advertisement catch lines. If you don’t believe us, look into this, “Har ghar apne maalik ke baare mein kuch kehta hai”. Does this remind you of Asian Paints? Well, it does and quite unmistakably. The cinematography of the movie is quite distinct with every scene portraying a perfect Rohan Sippy mark. Amit Roy’s direction of photography is brilliant as he manages to catch hold of the pulse of Goa accurately.
Performance is the USP of the movie, with each character being portrayed with full justice and passion. What is interesting to note is Abhishek Bachchan’s cop act - surprisingly, he always gets it right when he slips into the shoes of a cop. His natural flair of portraying the role of a crookedly straight cop is bang on. Everything, right from his body language to his dialogue rendition to his laidback attitude is absolutely avant-garde. Bipasha Basu gives a fair performance and is credible in a long-legged hippy lass role. Pratiek is a treat for his eyes as he performs the role of Lorry with full élan. Rana Daggubati makes a dashing debut. Aditya Pancholi makes for a weak villain, not extremely exciting. And before we wrap up, Deepika’s dum maaro dum act is a mixed bag - you enthusiastically wait for it and once it happens, you get quite uncomfortable as much with the bland remix as you get with the too much close ups.
Last call: DMD is a crystal maze. As much as it eludes you in the beginning, it does the same at the end - you just don’t know where you’ll end up being, but wherever you may be, the journey would be worth the effort!

After the phenomenal success of “Bluffmaster” way back in 2005, Rohan Sippy and Abhishek Dum Maaro DumBachchan have come together again with a suspense thriller titled “Dum Maaro Dum”. This will be Fox Star Studios third consecutive release after “Slumdog Millionaire” in 2009 and “My Name Is Khan” in 2010. Bannered under Fox Star Studios and Ramesh Sippy Entertainment, the film has been produced by Ramesh Sippy and directed by Rohan Sippy. The peppy and playful dance tracks and traditional Konkani songs have been composed by Pritam Chakraborty, while the lyrics have been penned by Jaideep Sahni. “Dum Maaro Dum” is set to hit the silver screen on April 22, 2011.
What happens when six different Indians cross against each other in Goa only to realize that their lives have changed forever? “Dum Maaro Dum” is a suspense thriller packed with adventures and action revolving around drugs and sex. Lorry (Prateik Babbar) is a student who wishes to be by his girlfriend’s side. He applies for a scholarship to a US university but is rejected and then, seeks help from a hustler on the pretext of getting his life on track. But he has a small price to pay in exchange of it - his soul. ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan) is a powerful and destructive cop trying to leave back his past but arrives in Goa with an assignment of destroying the local and international drug mafia, only to realize that nothing looks like what the city reveals.
DJ Joki (Rana Daggubati) is a local musician who has had a bite of the brutal drug mafia and hence, keeps everything unnoticed. But what happens when history repeats itself, and Joki is dragged back to encounter everything all over again? Zoey (Bipasha Basu), an aspiring airhostess, is a bold and hippy lass portraying a blend of local and foreign cultures. But behind this doubtful and abusive character, lies an innocent beauty whose dreams have been turned into ashes. Lastly, Lorsa Biscuta aka Biscuit (Aditya Pancholi) is a cruel Goan businessman spread across the state in all legal and illegal issues. All these unfamiliar characters are dragged into one place by an unknown and mysterious shadow who lives amongst the masses with several identities.
With all characters indifferent to each other, the film journeys you through the by lanes, beach shacks and raves of India’s hottest destination, Goa with each one trying to solve his individual saga. Do not forget to miss on the remix version of the 1970s sizzling item number “Dum Maaro Dum” performed by the very sensuous and sensational beauty Deepika Padukone. Right from the introduction to the finale, “Dum Maaro Dum” promises to keep you hooked to the silver screen with its never-ending twists, turns, shocks, and suspense. The hot and attractive international destinations are sure to add to the stars of this flick. With the trailers already creating news round the town, one can only expect the best to come from Abhishek Bachchan, in particular, in terms of serious acting. Let’s see how fruitful this Rohan-Abhishek pair proves to be when “Dum Maaro Dum” releases on April 22, 2011.
