Dechert welcomes 2011

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Mississauga, Ontario – Bob Dechert, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale welcomed constituents to celebrate the New Year on Sunday afternoon.

In his remarks to the crowd Dechert said, “As we began 2010, Canada’s economy was recovering as infrastructure projects (including the more than 140 projects in Mississauga), got seriously underway. Canadians looked ahead with optimism to hosting the world at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, the G8 and G20 Summits, and the important state visits by President Hu of China, Prime Minister Singh of India and our gracious Queen Elizabeth.”

Dechert mentioned Canada’s response to the deadly earthquake in Haiti, the floods in Pakistan and the ongoing fiscal crisis in Europe. “Canada responded with the largest per capita relief contribution in the world, again matched by the donations of generous Canadians.”

“Our Olympic and Paralympic athletes treated us to some truly inspiring performances and the organizers hosted the world at the best-run winter Olympics in history.”

“On the domestic front, our economy continued to recover as our Government implemented phase 2 of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.  By July, our economy had created over 440,000 new jobs, fully replacing all jobs lost in the recession.”

“Canada’s economic performance received high praise from the leaders of the world’s largest economies at the G8 and G20 Summits and continues to lead the OECD and G7 nations in growth.”

“Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed me as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice. I am very proud to be significantly involved with our Government’s numerous bills to:
·         Reform our young offender’s laws,
·         Repeal the faint hope clause for murderers, and
·         Crackdown on gang crime,
·         Car thieves,
·         Drug dealers,
·         White collar criminals, and
·         Sexual predators who target our children.”

“I was also appointed to serve on the Special Parliamentary Committee on Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.  As a member of that Committee, I had the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan in June and to visit our brave soldiers and civilian personnel in Kandahar and Kabul.”

“In August, Prime Minister Harper visited Mississauga to celebrate the construction of the Mississauga Bus Rapid Transit Corridor and our Government’s investment of $83 million dollars in that project.”

“In October, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty delivered the Fall Economic and Fiscal Update for Canada at a luncheon meeting of the Mississauga Chinese Business Association.”

“In November, Prime Minister Harper again visited Mississauga along with Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chuck Strahl and Industry Minister Tony Clement and myself to view the nearly completed new Mississauga Campus of Sheridan College and to announce the extension of the national infrastructure stimulus fund deadline to October 31, 2011.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with each of you, the Ontario Government and our Mayor and City Councillors to keep and improve Mississauga as a great place to live and raise our families.”

“On behalf of myself and Prime Minister Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to wish all of you and your families a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year!”
