Listings from the Mississauga Arts Council for December 16 to 23, 2010

Theatre  Living Arts Centre (4141 Living Arts Dr): A Christmas Carol presented by Dufflebag Theatre. Get into the holiday spirit as DuffleBag Theatre brings to life the magic of interactive, spontaneous story telling theatre where anything goes! Help teach Ebenezer Scrooge the true meaning of Christmas by bringing a non-perishable food item for donation to the Mississauga Food Bank. Stage West All-Suite Hotel Theatre (5400 Dixie Rd): Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.  The show is a musical masterpiece packed with incredible dance numbers and catchy tunes.  A retelling of the Old Testament story with a few Technicolor twists. Follow Joseph’s journey from bleak circumstances to become one of the most powerful men in Egypt and the transformation of his divided family to a happy ending.  Shows run until February 14. Concerts Orchestras Mississauga (Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Dr): Concert: Home For Christmas. The programme includes selections, A Christmas Fanfare by James Beckel, Christmas Carol Medley by Tony Royse, La Boutique Fantasque by Rossini/Respighi and Vocalise by Rachmaninov. Show will be presented on December 18 at 4pm ($15-51 - 905-615-4401) (mississauga.ca/symphony).

Dale Luarca (Fogo Tapas Bar & Lounge, 1140 Winston Churchill Blvd): Check out singer/songwriter Dale Luarca live in concert! Dale will be joined by performers Melissa Bel, ALRIGHT ALRIGHT and The Morning Thieves with special guests performances by Cody Cuisia and Denise Dunn. Sean Pinchin (Napoca Restaurant, 66 Lakeshore Rd E, Port Credit): Catch Blues Singer/Songwriter Sean Pinchin performing live on December 10, 17 at 8pm (myspace.com/seanpinchin).

Living Arts Centre (4141 Living Arts Dr): Inspiring and entertaining, Handel’s Messiah Rocks breathes new life into Handel’s most performed oratorio with stunning visual effects and an amazing combination of musicians complete with an orchestra, a rock band, a performance by the Mississauga Children's Choir and renowned soloists. Bring the entire family to experience the Handel’s Messiah for every generation – Handel’s Messiah Rocks!  December 16 & 17 at 8pm (905-306-6000) (livingartscentre.ca).

Marshall Dane (105 Lakeshore Rd W, Port Credit): Marshall Dane and The Law return to their hometown to bring the show that you've heard about all summer! The concert will begin with two amazing opening acts, Sean Cotton and Leah Daniels at 9:30pm.  December 17 (marshalldane.com).

VSKO - All Slovenian Cultural Committee (Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Dr): Slovenian Starlight's Christmas Concert. This special event will feature a performance by the Celebrity Symphony Orchestra.  The Celebrity Symphony Orchestra, winner of the 2010 MARTY Award, will return with a magnificent recreation of world-famous arias, songs and dances conducted by charismatic Meastro Dr. Andrzej Rozbicki.  December 19 at 5pm (905-306-6000) (livingartscentre.ca).

Visual Arts
 Art Gallery of Mississauga (300 City Centre Dr): Exhibit: Anghik Ruben: Shaman's Dreams, Curated by Robert Freeman and Rocco Pannese. Exhibit runs until December 23 (905-896-5088) (artgalleryofmississauga.com).

Visual Arts Mississauga (4170 Riverwood Park Lane): 3rd Annual Juried Show of Photography & New Media. Members of the media are also invited to attend the exhibition opening and awards ceremony happening at 6:30 pm December 7, 2010 at the same address.  Show runs until December 17 (Admission is free - 905-277-4313) (visualartsmississauga.com).

Neilson Park Creative Centre (56 Neilson Dr, Etob): Trees - the Oil Paintings of Anna Ostrowska. Show runs until January 11, 2011 (Admission is free - 416-622-5294) (neilsonparkcreativecentre.com).

Abbozzo Gallery (179 Lakeshore Road E): The Abbozzo Gallery presents its holiday exhibition featuring the work of Cora Brittan. The exhibit runs from December 10  to January 8. Gil Caldwell (4709 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke): Visual artist Gil Caldwell is hosting an exhibit of lino prints and watercolours at Montgomerys Inn in Etobicoke. One of his works will be featured on the cover of Lifes a Beach, an arts and entertainment magazine of Northern Florida, Winter 2011.  The exhibit runs until December 23 at Montgomery Inn (free admission - 905-273-5745).

Living Arts Centre (4141 Living Arts Dr): Exhibit: Uprising Collective: The Story of Stuff. During the Industrial Revolution, items were produced to survive across several decades. In contrast, modern-day patrons demand an ever-changing palette of consumables, products whose shelf-lives are increasingly short and intended for disposal. The Uprising Collective is a Mississauga-based group of artists and designers who have put forth a conversation on the temporality of the everyday object. The artists breathe new life into the discarded, resurrecting refuse into art objects that boast new functional and aesthetic potencies. Aleks Bartosik (Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, 20 Ava Rd, Brantford): Visual artist Aleks Bartosik will be exhibiting her artwork at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant in the Biannual Juried Exhibition, Forces of Nature. This group of Canadian and international artists working in various media, are connected by their highly-personal explorations of the estranged body. Emerging artists, self-taught artists, artists struggling with mental health issues, participate alongside formally trained artists to foster the dialectic the body as a site for both contemplation and stigmata.
