Listings from the Mississauga Arts Council for November 18 to 25, 2010

Theatre
Stage West All-Suite Hotel Theatre (5400 Dixie Rd): Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.  A musical masterpiece packed with incredible dance numbers and catchy tunes.  A retelling of the Old Testament story with a few Technicolour twists. Follow Joseph’s journey from bleak circumstances to become one of the most powerful men in Egypt, and the transformation of his divided family to a happy ending.  Shows run from November 25  to Feb 14 (905-238-0042) (stagewest.com).


Clarkson Music Theatre (Meadowvale Theatre, 6315 Montevideo Rd): Its Clarkson's 65th  anniversary so to celebrate the theatre group is presenting The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan. Clarkson Music theatre is proud to return to its roots in this year’s presentation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s popular operetta. This amazing Gilbert and Sullivan classic is one of the funniest they ever produced and has been adored the world over. It’s like the Prince and the Pauper with fun, farce and fantastic music thrown in. Etobicoke Musical Productions (Burnhamthorpe Auditorium, 500 The East Mall): Etobicoke Musical Productions presents, Oliver the Musical. Come out and enjoy downtown quality with the price and convenience of community theatre!  Shows run November 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 & Dec 4. Theatre Erindale (Theatre Erindale, 3359 Mississauga Rd N): A Child of Survivors. Adapted by the company from the award-winning memoir by Bernice Eisentein under the direction of Ralph Small.  November 11 -13, 16-20 (905-569-4369) (theatreerindale.com).

Living Arts Centre (4141 Living Arts Dr): Timeless Opera - La Boheme. It is love at first sight the moment Mimi and Rodolfo's eyes meet and hands touch. Yet can their love survive the tumultuous emotions of jealousy and the ravage of poverty? One of the most popular operas of all time, this rendition of Puccini's epic romance is complete with 1830s Paris inspired sets and costumes, performed in Italian with English subtitles and features an all Canadian cast, full live orchestra and chorus.  November 26 at 7:30pm ($35-$70 - 905-306-6000) (livingartscentre.ca).

Orchestras Mississauga (Living Arts Centre, 4141 Living Arts Dr): Orchestras Mississauga presents Longworth Plays Saint-Saëns, the long anticipated return of the celebrated concert pianist Peter Longworth to the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra for an exclusive one night only engagement. If you have yet to experience the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra live, then you’re missing out on one of the most remarkable delights that our city has to offer. Diverse and stimulating, a night at the symphony relaxes the mind and invigorates the senses! Longworth Plays Saint-Saëns offers the ideal opportunity to either discover or rediscover the magic of the MSO. Mississauga Arts Council/Wali Shah (Noel Ryan Auditorium, Mississauga Central Library, 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd W): The Mississauga Official Talent Show (MOTS) is an arts showcase spotlighting some of Mississauga's most talented youth aged between 13-19. MOTS is a great opportunity for the youth to be engaged in the city and make use of the talents they have. Residents of Mississauga are invited to attend the show and enjoy an evening of music, dance, art and poetry. The entrance fee will be $10 which can be paid for at the door. The show will take place on November 26th, 2010 from 6PM to 8PM at the Noel Ryan Auditorium in the Central Library at 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. November 26 at 6pm-8pm (mississaugaartscouncil.com).

Mississauga Children's Choir (St Matthews Roman Catholic Church, 1150 Monk’s Pass): Catch the Mississauga Children's Choir performing in Carmina Burana presented by Masterworks of Oakville. November 26 -27 at 8pm ($20-25) (mississaugachildrenschoir.com).

Sean Pinchin (Cameron House, Toronto): Catch Blues Singer/Songwriter Sean Pinchin performing live with Luke Nickolson on November 23  at  9pm (myspace.com/seanpinchin).

THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS (International Sports Bar and Eatery, 2480 Cawthra Rd): Mississauga's premier indie rock/underground hiphop/electronica innovator THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS is playing his first all ages show in three years, and it's in Mississauga! THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS performs a special set for his birthday, backed by his live band the Roster of Royalty.  The night will also feature performances from some of Mississauga's best up and coming acts including: Monroe, Selyne Maia, Joel Martin, Flo, Circle's Corner, and Seam. Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga (Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga, 84 South Service Rd): Mississauga stop for the Green Keys Tour featuring pianist, arranger and composer Frank Horvat. This family-friendly concert is one stop for the cross-Canada tour promoting eco-sustainability. All the piano music performed features Frank Horvat’s original compositions and improvisations. The highlight of the concert is the performance of Frank's composition, "Earth Hour" - a continuous 1-hour piano piece inspired by, and performed in the dark. Carla Casanova (Bread and Circus Kensinton Market, Toronto): Catch singer/songwriter Carla Casanova performing with her rock band "Emenor." The band will be joined by friends Lynn Jackson and Groopie and the Bandits. November 19 at 9pm.

Living Arts Centre (4141 Living Arts Dr): Rhythm & Soul - come and enjoy the sounds of Motown George St. Kitts. Journey back to the sounds of Motown with all your favourites from The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Jackson Five and more! Visual Arts

City of Mississauga (Mississauga Civic Centre, 300 City Centre Dr): The Christmas Marketplace Craft Sale. More than 50 artisans from across Ontario will be selling jewellery, pottery, wearable art, ornaments, children's clothing, jams, chocolates and much more. Neilson Park Creative Centre (56 Neilson Dr, Etob): Winter Artfest. Neilson Park Creative Centre's Winter Artfest offers high quality, handmade art and unique gifts created by local artisans, artists and craftspeople.  November 27 & 28 at 10am-4pm (free admission - 416-622-5294) (neilsonparkcreativecentre.com).

Mississauga Art Society (4170 Riverwood Park Lane): Visual Arts Mississauga proudly presents a new exhibit featuring the work of the Mississauga Art Society. The show runs from November 26  to 28 (Admission is free - 905-277-4313) (visualartsmississauga.com).

Living Arts Centre (4141 Living Arts Dr): Exhibit: Uprising Collective: The Story of Stuff. During the industrial revolution, items were produced to survive across several decades. In contrast, modern-day patrons demand an ever-changing palette of consumables, products whose shelf-lives are increasingly short and intended for disposal. The Uprising Collective is a Mississauga-based group of artists and designers who have put forth a conversation on the temporality of the everyday object. The artists breathe new life into the discarded, resurrecting refuse into art objects that boast new functional and aesthetic potencies.  The opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 25, 7 – 9pm. Art Gallery of Mississauga (300 City Centre Dr): FREE Inuit Art Talks - Presented in conjunction with Abraham Anghik Ruben: Shaman's Dreams.  Heather M. Beecroft speaks about Abraham Anghik Ruben and the co-op system. Heather is a frequent lecturer on Canadian art, Inuit art and culture, and Norval Morrisseau. Gwen Tooth (Beaux-Arts Brampton, 70 Main St N, Brampton): Exhibit: Rhythms of the Sea II - featuring the work of visual artist Gwen Tooth. The show is an exhibit of expressionist abstract paintings based on upon the rhythms of the sea. Art lovers are invited to the opening reception taking place on November 13 from 11:30am to 2:30pm.  The show will run until November 20 (905-454-5677) (beaux-artsbrampton.com).

Gil Caldwell (4709 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke): Visual artist Gil Caldwell is hosting an exhibit of lino prints and watercolours at Montgomery’s Inn in Etobicoke. One of his works will be featured on the cover of "Lifes a Beach," an arts and entertainment magazine of Northern Florida, Winter 2011.  The show runs until Dec 23. (free admission - 905-273-5745).

Events
Streetsville BIA (Main Street Square, Streetsville): Tree Lighting Celebration in Streetsville. Special activities for this year’s event include the arrival of Santa Claus, Lighting of the 2010 Christmas Tree, Horse & Wagon rides a performance by the Streetsville Musicorp Justus Choir as well as hot chocolate, hot cider, and treats for everyone!! The event will be held in support of Santa’s Food Drive,  non-perishable food items can be dropped off at Second Cup in Streetsville. Workshops & Classes

Mississauga Handweavers and Spinners Guild (Art Gallery of Mississauga, 300 City Centre Dr.): The November meeting of the Mississauga Hanweavers and Spinners Guild features a mini Silk Fusion workshop. Silk Fusion gives a felted effect, but with the glowing brilliance of silk. The technique will be used to create a Christmas decoration. November 23 at 7:30pm (905-896-3187).
