IN BETWEEN THE LINES Poetry and Art Show in Metaverse - Review by Reeti Mishra

The art gallery covers a vast plethora of emotions in women during their most vulnerable moments in life but also depicting their resilience and strength. With lines like ’I know I will burn till the fire burns in me’ to ‘I fear remaining an outline’, a woman’s path though is strewn with monotony, anonymity and most often being almost a non existent entity, these poems are an amazingly brilliant saga of how she carves out her own niche.

From the women as Shakti of the poet Mandira Ghosh and the power that comes from truth, bliss, and consciousness, Anna Yin’s poem speaks volumes about bonding with nature, missing someone loved and the entwining of all three. In Vedas, women are symbols of Prakriti, mother nature. Nature becomes part of us and we derive strength from nature.
Alka Tyagi’s poem leads us to the various phases of awakening, of truth around us!
If Zohra Zoberi’s poem is about empowered moments in an immigrant woman’s life, Sangeeta’s poem clearly states in a subtle manner the power of saying NO to others whereas undeniably stating that the real happiness lies in giving happiness to others.

It was indeed delightful and touching to read, as the poets have woven their poems delicately with words of wisdom and expressions so vivid and diverse; yet so powerful!

My best wishes to Meena Chopra and all the poets!

Winners of the 2018 Nathan Cohen Awards Announced

The Canadian Theatre Critics Association is pleased to announce that Karen Fricker and Barry Freeman have won the 2018 Nathan Cohen Awards for excellence in critical writing.
Fricker, theatre critic for the Toronto Star, won in the Short category for her review of Michel Tremblay’s classic Hosanna, as revived in 2016 by Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre.
Freeman, a drama professor at the University of Toronto and a Newfoundlander, won in the Long category for an essay dissecting the popularity of the musical Come From Away. It was published in the Summer 2017 issue of Canadian Theatre Review.
The biennial awards recognize work published over the past two theatre seasons. They were judged this year by Athabasca University professor emeritus Anne Nothof, a noted theatre scholar, broadcaster and currently editor of the online Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia.
“I am impressed by the quality and depth of theatre criticism in Canada, despite the cuts to newspaper coverage,” Nothof commented. “The reviews were often very inspiring, coming from a range of backgrounds and perspectives.”
“Once again, we had a great response to the competition, with submissions from across Canada,” added CTCA President Martin Morrow. “The Long category, in particular, attracted quite a few entries, suggesting that critics are finding more room for in-depth criticism online.”
The Nathan Cohen Awards, established in 1981, are given out every two years to honour outstanding critical writing about theatre and performance in print and/or electronic media. They are named after the legendary Toronto Star and CBC critic Nathan Cohen (1923-1971). A history of the awards and list of past recipients may be found on the CTCA website.
This year’s awards will be presented at a luncheon in Toronto in December.
Karen Fricker’s winning entry, published Oct. 3, 2016 in the Toronto Star, may be read here.
Barry Freeman’s entry, published Aug. 21, 2017 in Canadian Theatre Review, may be read here.StarBuzzOnline

2nd International Women’s Conference on South Asian Women: Socio-cultural expression through literature, poetry, theatre, cinema, media and storytelling (daastangoi, talk)

Invitation to attend 2nd International Women's Conference on South Asian Women: Socio-cultural expression through literature, poetry, theatre, cinema, media and storytelling (daastangoi, talk)
The South Asian women living in the western hemisphere go through so many economic social and cultural issues in their adopted countries. Uprooting from the native place, patriarchal family structure, economic insecurity and problems in adapting to the new socio- cultural milieu expose the South Asian women to many hardships. Conservative approach of the South Asian communities renders women as mute sufferer and most of the time their issues go unaddressed.

DISHA feels that women's issues should be voiced, discussed and a mechanism should be devised to address them promptly and effectively.

On behalf of DISHA-Association of Canadian Punjabi Women, I invite you to attend our 2day International Women Conference on "South Asian Women- Socio-cultural expression through literature, poetry, theatre, cinema, media and storytelling (Daastangoi, talk) from 17to 18June, 2017 at 340 Vodden st., Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Sarah Garton Stanley steps in to direct Bunny

Sarah Garton Stanley steps in to direct Bunny

April 20, 2016… Vanessa Porteous has had to withdraw from the Stratford Festival's 2016 season, in which she was to direct Hannah Moscovitch's new play, Bunny. An unforeseen family health issue requires her attention in Calgary.
Sarah Garton Stanley will step in to direct Bunny, a Festival commission, which begins rehearsals on June 9 and premières on August 18.
"We were all very sorry to hear that Vanessa would not be able to direct this exciting new play," said Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino. "Her previous Festival production of Christina, The Girl King was beautiful and Vanessa's collaboration with Hannah on Bunny promised a terrific experience in the theatre. I wish Vanessa well and look forward to her return to the Festival in the years ahead.
"Fortunately in Sarah Stanley we have a director who is extremely gifted, skilled at developing new plays and deeply trusted by Hannah herself. I'm delighted to welcome Sarah to the Stratford Festival. I have long admired her work and am profoundly grateful that she has made herself available to direct this remarkable script."

AWIC presents Kavisammelan with Hindi Sahtiya Sabha in Toronto

Poetry in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi in celebration of women empowerment in Toronto.
On 12th March 2016 “AWIC” a leading community organization of Canada organized poetry reading of Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi poets residing in Canada in association with the literary organization “Hindi Sahitya Sabha”. The event, coordinated and conducted by Meena Chopra and Anil Purohit, was in celebration of International women’s day.

The event idea was the brainchild of Priti Lamba the present President of AWIC in promotion of the Hindi language in Canada. She was very excited and happy about the event and said, “these kind of literary events synergize the individuals and the community and we need to have them happening frequently here in Toronto. These are the kind of events that unite, bind and uplift the community and this is the need of the day”. Present President of Hindi Sahitya Sabha, Mr. Anil Purohit was the Master of Ceremony and conducted the entire afternoon beautifully.

It was attended by known and eminent poets including Devendra Mishra, Shiam Tripathi, Sameer lal, Meena Chopra, Anil Purohit, Tahir Aslam Gora, Jagmohan Sanga, Kuldeep, Jahan Munawar, Sudha Mishra, Raj Kashyap, Kamaljeet Kamal, Parveen Sultana, Raj Maheswari, Sarojini Johar, Gopal Baghel, Farhat Sujaat, Junaid Akhtar and many more.

The message of Unity, Growth, and Woman empowerment was very clear in the entire poetry session. Most of the poetry was touching and uniquely depicted the changing social scenario of woman and her being gradually empowered with changing times. The many aspects of female force came out strongly in the poetry of the poets. Poems also well reflected the traditional and the four fold status-role of a woman as a daughter, wife, housewife, and mother juxtaposed to a new and modern emancipated woman.

The event was held at AWIC office located at Sheppard avenue, Toronto. Priti Lamba, and her Board Members, Kamlesh Oberoi, Bhavna Tailor, Vanita Pais, Neetu Gill, Sheela Barot, Shelly Srivastav, and other members of AWIC enthusiastically participated in the event. AWIC also served a sumptuous lunch for the participants and guests before the poetry meet.

Aruna Bhatnagar the past Vice President of AWIC and past President Hindi Sahitya Sabha, Haleema Sadia and Tahir Aslam Gora of Tag TV and Bhupinder Virdi CEO StarBuzzMedia, amongst many others were also present for the event.

"Resilience and Triumph" provides readers with an eye-opening glimpse into 50 years of immigrant women's lives in Canada

A collection of true stories from 54 radicalized immigrant and refugee women create an eclectic mix of three generations of voices. Women in their 20s to those in their 70s provide snapshots that begin in the 1960s and go to the present. Together these vividly recounted entries capture historical and everyday moments that reveal striking similarities and differences. Resilience and Triumph provides readers with an eye-opening glimpse into 50 years of immigrant women's lives in Canada.

I really got a lot out of this rich, perceptive, varied collection dealing with very current and relevant issues -- immigration, identity, integration and barriers to it -- to name a few. And how women negotiate these realities. The last two sections touch upon feminist theory and activism, but in an accessible manner. I found the section that contains voices of 2nd generation women particularly interesting (section III). - Veena Gokhale
