Sunday, April 2 Demonstration/Symposiums: Teaching Dance Online 10:30am-12:30pm; Film Retrospective 1:30pm-2:30pm; Symposium on Contemporary Dance 3pm-5pm.
The 16th Kalanidhi International Festival of Indian Dance runs Tuesday March 28 - Sunday April 2 at Harbourfront Centre's Fleck Dance Theatre with than 40 acclaimed and emerging dance artists from Canada, the U.S. and India plus talks and a film retrospective.
This important live and live-streamed festival features a range of dance styles from classical to cutting-edge in Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Kathak to Chhau, Kathakali, Contemporary and more.
The Festival features such acclaimed artists as Sujata Mohapatra (Odissi star from India), Menaka Thakkar (Toronto, Festival Artistic Director) and Navarasa Dance Theatre (aerial dance troupe from Boston/Los Angeles) as well as Sinha Danse (Montreal), Deepti Gupta (Ottawa) and more.
The festival is dedicated to the late Sudha Khandwani, sister of Menaka Thakkar who now takes over the festival as Artistic Director. Menaka has been a trailblazer for South Asian classical dance in Canada. She is the first Indian dancer to receive the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in Performing Arts and the Governor General's Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dance. She gives a rare performance on Opening Night.
