Spoken Word Meets Dance In Performance Series That Supports Local Emerging Artists


Mississauga, ON – Sampradaya Dance Creations (a Mississauga-based South Asian classical dance company) is committed to supporting young artists pursue a career in the arts.  In 2012, Sampradaya launched a performance series called the Horizon Series dedicated to featuring emerging artists trained in various South Asian art forms. On Sunday, April 3, 2016-4pm at Sampradaya Theatre in Mississauga, ON this installment will showcase spoken word artist Sheniz Janmohammed and classical dancer, Atri Nundy in an impactful collaboration of poetry and dance.

The Horizon Series program was created to help emerging artists who have trained in any classical South Asian art form looking for opportunities to perform to further enhance their career.  Selected artists perform and share with the audience insight about themselves and their journey as an artist in a talk-back session that follows every performance.  The venue is Sampradaya Theatre, which is fully equipped with professional and lighting and sound to achieve a true performance experience in an intimate theatre setting.

“Emerging artists are looking for performance opportunities to grow their careers.  Sampradaya is pleased to be offering this platform with the generous support of Canadian Heritage, the RBC Foundation and Scotiabank”, shares Lata Pada, Artistic Director for Sampradaya Dance Creations.   On April 3, the audience will experience the artful collaboration that integrates poetry with classical Indian dance in a new piece created by Ms. Janmohammed (author, artist educator and spoken word artist) and Ms. Nundy (dancer and choreographer).

Tickets for the Horizon Series are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Sampradaya office at 905-607-8434. The Horizon Series is presented two to three times a year and features a different set of artists each time. 

SAMPRADAYA Dance Creations is a Canadian, Mississauga-based professional dance company specializing in the creation and production of classical and contemporary dance works rooted in the tradition of bharatanatyam, a dance form originating from India. Founded in 1990 by Lata Pada, C.M. accomplished dancer and choreographer, the Company continues to inspire audiences with annual productions produced locally and internationally while nurturing the talents of emerging young dancers. The Company celebrated their 25th anniversary in May 2015.

The Company receives on-going operational support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Mississauga.   Program specific support received from Canadian Heritage, the RBC Foundation and Scotiabank.
