Saving Canadian Families Money

Member of Parliament Param Gill
Our Conservative Government’s low-tax plan is helping Canadian families keep more of their hard-earned money where it belongs: in their pockets. Indeed, under our Government the average family of four is saving $3,400 on their taxes each year.
Thanks to our low-tax plan, the Parliamentary Budget Officer found that federal tax cuts since 2005 —mostly by our Government—are saving Canadians roughly $30 billion per year, approximately $17 billion saved from lowering personal income taxes and $13 billion in savings from lower consumption taxes. With these tax cuts, the federal tax burden for Canadian families is the lowest it’s been in half a century.
The Budget Officer also determined that the most significant share of tax savings went to low and middle income earners, and singled out our Government’s Working Income Tax Benefit and GST cuts as the two most significant “income inequality improving” measures examined in the study. In fact, despite our growing population, there are 1.4 million fewer Canadians living in poverty under our Government than there were under the Liberals.
These findings support the report by the New York Times that Canada’s middle class is thriving under our Conservative Government and is now the “richest in the world.”
Unfortunately, the Opposition want to undo all of our hard work. Thomas Mulcair and the NDP would undermine Canada’s job creation by raising taxes on business, and they would make life more expensive for Canadian families by introducing a $20 billion carbon tax that would raise the price of gas, groceries, electricity and other essential goods that families rely on.
Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau isn’t even sure what “middle class” means. First he said that anyone living off of assets or savings wasn’t middle class, meaning almost anyone who is retired doesn’t count. Then he changed his definition to say that only people living “paycheck to paycheck” are middle class, meaning high-spending millionaires could be members. With all this confusion it isn’t too surprising that he decided to make the cornerstone of his platform the legalization of marijuana instead of supporting Canadian families and helping create jobs and economic growth.
Canada’s fiscal and economic strength is something we should all be proud of. That’s why our Government will continue to keep taxes low, support job creation, and stay on track to balance Canada’s budget in 2015 so that we can deliver even more tax relief for families.
