Toronto, January 13, 2013- Deepak Obhrai, M.P. for Calgary East & Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, recipient of Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award, suggested that the Indian Parliament declare December 29th National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Speaking at a rally "Fight to end abuse against women in memory of Delhi gang rape victim" in Brampton, Ontario, Obhrai said: "Her wish was ‘I want to live’ and this act will ensure we not only pay homage to her, but her plight becomes a rallying point to make women safe not only in India but across the world. She will then live in our hearts forever. This follows Canada’s example of December 6th becoming National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, following the Montreal Massacre in 1989.”
Obhrai also said “continuing stories from around the world show violence against women is a world-wide crime. Change can only comewhen schools, at the early stage, incorporate in their curriculum the need for respect for both genders.StarBuzz, Toronto
