Monday, September 3, 2012 (Toronto, ON) –The meaning of life is explored in three disparate but interconnected stories in the TIFF City to City Opening Night Gala “Ship of Theseus" from venerable international film sales company Fortissimo Films, the leader in bringing India’s New Wave of independent cinema to global audiences. The gorgeously shot Ship of Theseus is set for the red carpet on opening night of the festival- Thursday, September 6 at 9:30pm.If a ship gradually has had its parts replaced, is it still the same ship?  Using this ancient philosophical puzzle as a starting point, Ship of Theseus takes audiences on a cosmic journey into Plato’s Cave, examining the meaning of identity through three interconnected stories.  What can a blind photographer (actress and Egyptian Revolution activistAida Elkashef), a dying animal activist monk (acclaimed stage actorNeeraj Kabi*), and a determined stockbroker (Sohum Shah*) in India’s most vibrant city possibly have in common?

Like any good philosophical puzzle, the process of finding answers is more important than both the questions and answers themselves, and first time filmmaker Anand Gandhi* converges these seemingly disparate storylines in a way that provides conclusions even as it inspires further examination.

Fortissimo Films made the decision to co-produce Ship of Theseusafter discovering the title at the IFFI Film Market in Goa last November 2011.  Continuing a commitment to discovering and championing emerging independent Indian film talents that began in 2009 with Road, Movie this past year alone has seen Fortissimo partner with Anurag Kashyap on Michael at TIFF 2011 and Gangs of Wasseypur andPeddlers at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival, in addition toShip of Theseus, and Miss Lovely from Future East Film.
Ship of Theseus starts this year’s TIFF journey to Mumbai on a transformative note that is sure to stay with audiences long after the festival is over.  Take the journey.
