Take Back the Night Art Fest Call for Artists! Calling all artists! If you are looking for a great opportunity to perform music, dance or spoken word, or exhibit your art, then the Take Back the Night Art Fest Event, in partnership with Mississauga Arts Council's Culture Days programming is for you! The deadline for submissions has been extended to Wednesday, August 22, 2012. The Take Back the Night Art Fest is an annual community rally and march hosted by the Sexual Assault/Rape Crisis centre Peel, in partnership with MAC and other community agencies, to raise awareness around sexual violence and violence against women, children and trans folk. The goal is to spark a fundamental shift in the manner that young people interact to create healthy relations that respect dignity of all women. The actual event will take place on Friday, September 28, 2012 from 3 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. and will include everything from music, dance, visual arts and spoken word! It will take place at the Lincoln M, Alexander Secondary School, located in Malton.  Create, Enjoy & Celebrate at MAC’s 30th Celebration! The Mississauga Arts Council is ecstatic about celebrating its 30 years of being the art and soul of Mississauga through the Create, Enjoy and Celebrate programme on Friday,
August 24, 2012 at Celebration Square. Join us for a full evening of festivities, commencing with film screenings and a marketplace at 5 p.m., followed by an exhilarating lineup of stage performances at 7 p.m., and experience the explosion of art that is Mississauga. Hosted by CityNews’ Francis D’Souza, this is an all-ages event that will incorporate multidisciplinary, multicultural and collaborative stage presentations from some of the most talented artists in the city. The soiree will include elements to fulfill everyone’s artistic desires! It will feature musicians operating in different genres who will work together with filmmakers, visual artists, spoken word artists, poets, and dancers to create a cross-cultural jam that will truly take your breath away! Some of the performers taking centre stage include musicians from the Kaleidoscope Chinese Performing Arts, performing a special cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration with modern dancer, Colleen Snell, and rock band Vibonics, fusing with poet Zohra Zoberi on an intriguing musical landscape. Help us celebrate 30 years of supporting Mississauga artists and the general community by also coming out to the marketplace, where artists will be exhibiting and selling their exceptional creations that will truly amaze you. Did we mention there will also be food? While enjoying some delicious treats, audience members will also be equipped with paintbrushes and buckets of water and invited to paint temporary art on the concrete in a tribute to Mississauga’s sister city, Kariya. The Mississauga Arts Council was established in 1981 by a City Resolution. It is a non-profit registered charity governed by a Board of Directors, with the mission to “foster and develop, support and champion a vibrant, dynamic arts community in the City of Mississauga through services, to enrich the lives of its citizens.” So come out and make a difference by supporting an organization that has been enriching lives for 30 years. The Mississauga Arts Council in partnership with the Mississauga YMCA are pleased to announce a call to artists for submissions for the next Limelight Art Exhibit at the Mississauga YMCA. This exhibition is aimed to give public exposure to contemporary youth artists in the GTA to a wide audience of visitors to the YMCA space. We seek to create a diverse and stimulating cultural environment that enriches the lives of the Cityʼs residents, visitors and employees by integrating art and the residents of Mississauga and area. Eligibility: Original work in any medium, excluding video and sound; Work must be smaller than 4ft x 4ft; Artist should be emergent, meaning not commercially represented; Artist must be between the ages of 12 and 25 years of age, or be senior in high school/studying in an undergraduate related program; Submitting artists must reside or be working in the greater Mississauga; Must be able to drop off and pick up works; Students may submit; No fee for submission. Conditions: Work must have been produced after January 2011; While only digital submissions will be accepted, selected works must be exhibition ready (framed, mounted where necessary – no loose prints or paper); Work submitted should be safe for a public and family space. Guidelines for Submission: Only digital submissions will be accepted; Each artist may submit up to five (5) works. Technical Requirements: JPG files, 1-4MB in size; Filenames must be formatted as follows: “lastname_imagetitle.jpg.” Submissions must be accompanied by separate file containing an image list including: Title of work; Medium; Date completed; Dimensions (in inches); Edition (if applicable); Submission must include a short artist bio/cv (100 words) and artist statement (500 words) to support works submitted, or artistic practice. Submissions must be emailed to ebony.jansen@mail.utoronto.ca by August 24 at 5 p.m. Selected artists will be notified August 28. The exhibition will open August 31 and run until November 23. Enjoy live music by the water all summer at Port Credit Memorial Park at this year’s 2012 Sunset Concert Summer Series! This concert series is brought to you in partnership with the Culture Division, the Port Credit BIA and the Mississauga Arts Council. Every Sunday evening from 6:30 p.m. to sunset, an exciting line-up of talented local Mississauga artists will be taking centre stage. The Mississauga Pops Concert Band will conclude the Sunset Concert Summer Series on August 26. Make sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the beautiful sweet sound of music! Calling all singers! The Boston Pizza Idol Competition has started and will take place every Tuesday for the rest of the summer until August 28. The event is proudly sponsored by The Mississauga Arts Council, Metalworks Institute and InSauga.com. Boston Pizza Idol is a 10 week karaoke competition. Seating starts at 9 p.m. and the competition begins at 10 p.m. The winner will receive a $5000 Grand Prize and the top 3 finalists will receive studio time from Metalworks. The event is hosted by Joel Martin (www.joelmartin.ca) and features industry professional judges from Warner Music, iLLScarlett, the Arkells, Canadian Idol and Metalworks. This is the biggest Boston Pizza Idol ever with a $5000 Grand Prize and studio time from Metalworks for the top 3 finalists. They will then sing for the following 7 weeks competing for the best score from our industry professional judges. The Mississauga Arts Council is delighted to continue to work with Whole Foods Market Square One in Mississauga. Art and cuisine has collided in this beautiful new partnership dedicated to promoting healthy living and artistic expression in Mississauga. The Mississauga Arts Council has been selected as Whole Foods Market Square One’s featured charity for its One Dime at a Time Program. For the months of August and September, customers can choose to donate 10 cents to MAC when they re-use their own shopping bags. What a beautiful opportunity for MAC! We are delighted!! The event will be hosted by spoken word artist Matt Miller from the Mississauga Arts Council's Limelight Association of Young Artists. The Contemporary Jamaican Art exhibit, circa1962/circa2012 will be featured at the Art Gallery of Mississauga until September 8, 2012, in celebration of Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary Celebration of their Independence from Britain. On August 6, 1962, Jamaica became a nation and officially received its Independence from Britain. It is with an immense amount of pride that the Jamaican Diaspora in Canada joins with the island nation in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Independence. Under the Patronage of the Jamaican High Commissioner, Her Excellency, Sheila Sealy Monteith and Jamaican Consul General to Toronto, Seth George Ramoco with the Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc. will unveil a summer of events in the areas of Art, Literature, Dance and Theatre, which will celebrate the island's vibrant cultural heritage. The exhibition explores changing ideas about art in Jamaica from the period from Independence in 1962 to the present day, placed in the context of broader developments in Jamaican culture and society. Poupeye has curated juxtaposing work that was produced by influential Jamaican artists in the period around Independence with groundbreaking national artists of the early 21st century. The exhibition presents a "then" and "now" view of Jamaican art. ion elements entitled, "Wi Oh So Clean — from the Fambily Series." Her masterpiece exemplifies a family portrait and what it means to be masculine and its relation of gangs to that ideology. “In my generation today, there are a lot of issues relating to violence, gender, identity and socioeconomic politics. And even after 50 years, there are still similar conversations that are happening now. But the moment has changed and the picture has changed. We are not concerned with moments of nostalgia, we are concerned with the moment we are in, the present,” explains Ebony of her art  There will be a series of events scheduled every day throughout the summer, over 50 activities culminating on September 8, 2012. Produced by the Art Gallery of Mississauga, in collaboration with the Jamaica 50 Celebration Inc., these events celebrate 50 years of Jamaica's Independence.  Artists and artisans are invited to participate in the Visual Arts Mississauga’s Art in the Park Call for Submissions this unique opportunity to display and sell their work in the splendour of  Riverwood and Visual Arts Mississauga’s picturesque Art Centre. Spaces will be available in the Art Centre, in the Historic MacEwan Barn or on the front lawn. Guests will enjoy musicians, a community art project as well as instructor’s demonstrations throughout the day. Space is limited. The deadline for registering is September 3. Call for Artist Proposals: The Gaze! Philosopher Jacques Lacan complicates the understanding of our view in the mirror by distinguishing between the eye's look and the Gaze. The Gaze speaks to the uncanny sense that the object of our glance is somehow looking back at us of its own will. The AGM seeks artists working in the form of video, short form animation or digital based inventions which define, broaden and contribute to the concept. Works will be on Mississauga Celebration Square screens for 3 to 12 months. The deadline is September 15 at midnight. Interested artists can view it on the website. The 14th annual Tim Horton’s Southside Shuffle Blues & Jazz Festival will be held from September 7 to 9 this year and will bring a world of blues and jazz music to Port Credit once again – and this year the entertainment is bigger than ever! This year, there are four stages in Memorial Park and the entertainment will be non-stop as performances on one stage ends and starts up on another. Dubbed the Five Buck Blues, it costs only $5 to get into the park to experience these four stages of endless music.  A weekend pass is $10. The Heath and Sherwood main stage will feature some of the top blues acts from across Canada, including Cameo Blues Band, Fathead, Jack de Keyzer and Stacy Mitchhart.  Cheryl Lescomb returns with the Tucson Choir Boys and Downchild Blues Band closes out the weekend for the 14th straight year…a show not to be missed! The Mississippi ‘Find Your True South’ main stage will feature an amazing lineup of musicians from the True South – Mississippi - proving once again that the Southside Shuffle is a world class festival with the talent to back it up. The ‘Wasaga Beach Stonebridge’ main stage hosts its own impressive lineup with Jimmy Bowskill, the Scott Holt Band, Loco Zydeco and the incredible Shakura S’aide, among many others. As the gateway to the Festival, the ‘Holmar Plumbing, B&D Auto Recycling’ sponsored Dave de Eyre Square will welcome visitors to the festival with some amazing acts, including Al Lerman, Tucson Choir Boys and Paul James. There’s much more throughout the weekend, including the ever popular Beggar’s Banquet Banquet, which will also kick off the weekend festivities on Thursday, Sept. 6, with host Johnny Max. Everyone’s favourite festival attraction, The Street Shuffle, is also back this year.  On Saturday, the Street Shuffle will host more than 30 bands along Lakeshore Road between Hurontario Street and Stavebank Road from 2 to 6 p.m., including blues, jazz, Dixieland and more.  Don’t miss the biggest street party in the city. The Junior Jam, Harps for Kids, Vendor Village, Molson Beer Gardens and Food Court can also be found in Memorial Park.  With more than 175 bands in 20-plus clubs and venues in Port Credit holding live music performances, along with the Legion Jam stage, you may be stressed as you decide who to see first. The Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre is proud to present, 4 The Sake of Art, a new exhibition and visual adventure into the contemporary artwork of Sandra George, Jo Ann Haynes, Mary Rischke and Maria Weir. This exhibition showcases vibrant expressive art created through the exploration of self-expression, encompassing the mediums of print making, water colour, acrylic, mixed media and sculpture. Diverse works of art are presented in spectacular colour, texture, form and imagery. The exhibit will run from August 17 to September 19, 2012 at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre. Opening reception is on August 19 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with Special Entertainment by Frank Lloyd Wrong, featuring: Matthew Rampen, Spencer Waugh and Ben Sprawson. Sandra George enjoys using found objects in her artwork, making something new out of the discarded and forgotten. Jo Ann Haynes' artwork is a channeled endeavor where she dwells in endless possibilities of color, medium and light. Mary Rischke loves the creative process, the excitement of experiencing new mediums and techniques, colour, texture and movement spilling onto the canvas. Maria Weir finds that emotion is the essence of life and art is her ultimate expression that connects her to the world.
