JJ Valaya set to inaugurate his exclusive 2012 collection in Toronto as he celebrates the 20th anniversary of his eponymous label this June
Toronto, May 29, 2012: There are fashion designers and then there’s JJ Valaya. One of the senior-most Indian designers, Valaya has created a revolution of sorts each time he’s showcased. Chic, precise, utterly relevant, and never retro, his ensembles celebrate the joie de vivre of fashion with an unabashedly quirky attitude. Now, he is set to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his brand the House of Valaya. The celebrations take place next weekend right here in Downtown Toronto.
The fashion show, where Valaya is expected to showcase his exclusive 2012 collection, will be followed by a grand dinner to be held at the historic Liberty Grand in downtown Toronto on Sunday, June 10.
“J J Valaya is an iconic name in South Asian fashion, known for his creativity and style.” said Ayesha Mawaz-Khan and Dr. Nozhat Choudry of Eventivity Inc, the Oakville-based event management firm at the helm of the Gala Dinner/fashion show and the polo match. “We are proud to present an evening of dinner, fashion and culture with the House of Valaya where he will showcase his exclusive 2012 collection.”
Trained under pioneer Indian fashion designer Rohit Khosla, JJ Valaya is well known for the elegance and edgy grandeur of the luxury couture and ready-to-wear collections he designs for men and women. His designs – remarkable for the brilliant silk brocades, intricate Indian embroideries, sparkling crystals and a kaleidoscope of colours – are sure to be a celebration of breathtaking Indian craftsmanship.
The luxury and fashion-centric House of Valaya was founded by Valaya along with his brother TJ Singh in 1992. One of the biggest names on the South Asian bridal fashion scenes, the House was known to be amongst the first few labels in India to invest in in-house sampling and sustained research and development at a time when the fashion industry was hardly organized in India. Since its launch, it has dressed Royalty, celebrities and the social elite globally, and is distinguished for its exclusivity. Today, the brand encompasses Couture, Ready-to-Wear and Home lines. Valaya’s ensembles often commence at $25,000 price points.
The much anticipated fashion show has a royal touch too. Raj Mata, HRH Princess Diya Kumari and Maharaj Narendra Singh of Jaipur will be attending the event.
“We are honored to have the presence of HRH Princess Diya Kumari and Maharaj Narendra Singh at our events,” said Mawaz-Khan and Dr. Choudry. “And, we’re especially excited and grateful that they are participating in JJ Valaya’s anniversary celebrations.”
The Royal Couple, known for their interest in and support for arts, culture and sports, will be in town to participate in an Exhibition Polo Game – also part of Valaya’s Anniversary Celebrations – that same weekend.
Maharaj Narendra Singh, a long-time polo enthusiast, is set to lead a game of Polo on the previous afternoon along with his team the Jaipur Royals who will be playing against The Toronto Polo Club. The game will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 12 noon at the Toronto Polo Club in Alliston, Ontario, about an hour north of Toronto.
This is the second consecutive year that the Royal Jaipur Polo team will be playing in Toronto. Led by Maharaj Narendra Singh, the polo team, comprising well-known players like Uday Kalan, Ransher Singh, Manu Pal Godara and Dig Vijay Singh, took part in the "Polo For Heart" event last summer that raised more than more than $200,000 for heart and stroke-related charities.
