Liberal Statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-OTTAWA– Liberal Critic for the Status of Women, the Hon. Judy Sgro, made the following statement today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women:

“For the past 30 years, women’s activists around the globe have marked November 25thas a day for ending violence.

Though we have taken significant steps to address gender-based violence here in Canada, there is still much more we must do at home and abroad to ensure that women are not persecuted or threatened because of their gender.

On behalf the Liberal Party and our parliamentary caucus, I would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to eliminate violence against women and to the ongoing implementation of the crucial United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women.”

Liberal Women’s Caucus Chair, the Hon. Dr. Carolyn Bennett added:

“The sad fact is that women’s equality has taken a backseat over the last seven years under the Harper Conservatives. Not only has the government done nothing to address the core problems that confront vulnerable women, but they have actively undermined those programs that prevent violence against women.

Violence against women remains the most significant barrier to the achievement of women’s full equality. We need specific measures to address its root causes, such as a comprehensive plan to address violence against women and human trafficking, and an affordable housing strategy that includes emergency shelter housing for women in need.

Today and every day, the Liberal Party stands unshakably committed to ending all acts of violence against women, and to striving for the achievement of full substantial equality for all women.”
