SHEDIAC - Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Dominic LeBlanc today made the following statement in support of the people of Syria and their fight for democratic freedoms and human rights:
"On behalf of Liberal Leader Bob Rae and the Liberal Caucus, I strongly condemn the escalating violence by the Syrian government against the people of Syria.
Recent reports of a military build-up near the city of Jisr al-Shughour and reports of serious human rights violations against Syrian citizens, including the burning of farmland and the deployment of helicopter gunships against civilians, are worrisome and must not be allowed to continue.
We call on the Government of Canada to work with the United Nations to put an end to the repression of democratic expression by this violent regime, and to take steps to alleviate the suffering of the thousands of refugees already displaced by this brutal crackdown.
