HARPER ANNOUNCES NEW ADULT FITNESS TAX CREDIT
Conservatives also announce doubling of Children’s Fitness Tax Credit

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that a re-elected Conservative Government will introduce a new $500 Fitness Tax Credit for adults once the budget is balanced, and will double the existing Children’s Fitness Tax Credit from $500 to $1000 within the next Conservative mandate.

“Parents know that regular exercise is a key part of their children’s development, and gets kids started on a lifetime of healthy, active living,” said Harper. “But we also recognize that the cost of activities like sports or dance can place a strain on family budgets. Our low-tax plan will support these families.”

In 2007, the Harper Government established the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, which benefits close to 1.4 million Canadian families annually. To help Canadian parents with the rising costs of organized sports and fitness activities, a re-elected Harper Government will double the value of the credit to cover up to $1,000 in registration fees for children’s physical activities.

In addition, there are currently 7.5 million adult Canadians who participate in sports and fitness activities. To encourage participation in regular physical activity, a re-elected Harper Government will create a new $500 fitness tax credit benefiting adult Canadians.

“Research consistently shows that physical activity results in better health outcomes for individuals,” said Harper. “Extending the fitness tax credit to include adults is good for the personal health of Canadians, and can reduce costs to our health care system overall.”

Harper noted that the extension of the fitness tax credit to adult Canadians is supported by a wide array of health-related organizations in Canada, including the Fitness Industry Council of Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
