StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-March 25, 2011 - History was made today in Canada with the passage of a Liberal motion that found the Harper Conservatives in contempt of Parliament and declares non-confidence in the government.“This government does not have the confidence of the House of Commons,” said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. “The Conservatives have broken a basic rule of our democracy and can no longer remain in office.
“This Parliament does not write blank cheques, and the people’s representatives have a right to know what the government will spend taxpayers’ money on. But for four months, this House – and the Canadian people – were stonewalled by this government when we demanded to know how much Canadian taxpayers were being asked to pay for fighter jets, for prisons, and for corporate tax breaks.” Stephen Harper must now ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a general election. He goes into the history books as the only Prime Minister to head a government that was found in contempt by the House of Commons for concealingthe information MPs need to hold the government accountable to the people of Canada.
“After five years of a Conservative government, it is time to say enough is enough,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “Enough politics of fear. Enough of the politics of division. Enough of the politics of personal destruction. Enough abuse of power.” Stephen Harper’s inner-circle faces serious charges involving jail time for breaking Canada’s election laws, and he appointed as his top advisor someone who served prison time for stealing money from his clients and now faces accusations for influence-peddling. “This government is out of control and out of touch,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “They have no credible plan to tackle the deficit, no numbers we can believe in, no vision of how to sustain our health care system – just bad choices for our families and our economy by spending billions on jets, jails, and giveaways to oil companies, insurance companies, and banks.
“It’s time for a change. It’s time for Canadians to choose a new Liberal government that will focus scarce resources where they really matter: early learning and child care, college and university education for all, family care for our loved ones, and security and dignity in retirement.”
