PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER PAYS TRIBUTE TO OUTSTANDING CANADIANS ON FLAG DAY

Prime Minister Stephen Harper presents flags from the Peace Tower to Lisa Miller and Karen Boire, the founders of the Red Friday Rally, on National Flag of Canada Day
StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-Date: February 15, 2011For immediate release - OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today will celebrate National Flag of Canada Day with a new tradition – presenting the Peace Tower flag to two worthy Canadians, Lisa Miller and Karen Boire.

“Our Canadian flag represents the ideals of freedom, democracy, and justice – it’s these values that are upheld each day by the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, and their family members – like Lisa and Karen – who support them as they do their heroic work.”

Dubbed “the Red Friday Ladies,” Lisa Miller and Karen Boire spearheaded a grassroots movement in Canada in support of our hard-working men and women in uniform – a simple expression of respect and honour by wearing red every Friday.

They hosted the first, and largest, Red Friday Rally in Canada in September 2006. Since then, they have attended and hosted countless other events, and continue to spread the word about the importance of Red Fridays.

In honour of Flag Day, Prime Minister Harper will express his gratitude, on behalf of all Canadians, by presenting Lisa and Karen with the Peace Tower flag – a tradition that will continue every year with worthy Canadian patriots.
