CITIZENS FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2011 WITH A DIVERSE AND UNIQUE LINEUP OF EVENTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto- February is Black History Awareness Month, and Citizens for the Advancement of Community Development (CACD) and the Mississauga Valley Community Centre (MVCC) & Library are playing their part by raising awareness of how black culture has greatly influenced our society. On February 24th, CACD will host a day of community events and entertainment focusing on Black Canadians and what they have done to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation we are today.

The day-long celebration, "African-Canadians: Trailblazers of the Past, Present, and Future", will begin with several morning events, including a family storytime for kindergarten students from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., bracelet/necklace making from 12 – 1 p.m. and a free family skate at the Mississauga Valley Community Skating Rink from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Afternoon events include storytime for primary school students and drumming demonstrations from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

The evening programming will kick off at 6 p.m. with a series of exhibits showcasing black history through books, arts and crafts, a presentation on “Black Presence in Canada”, cultural music by local artist Wes McKenzie, poetry and spoken word recitals, breakdancing demonstrations, cultural skits and cultural food sampling. In addition, a number of guest speakers (including Peter Fonseca and former Toronto Argonaut Bruce Smith) will be making special presentations to commemorate Black History Month from 7 – 8 p.m.

All activities will be held at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre (located at 1275 Mississauga Valley Boulevard).

CACD works in the Greater Toronto Area and Peel (Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon) to transform the lives of high-risk youth through programming that serves their unique needs, develops leadership capabilities and fosters civic participation. CACD has approximately 40 members, 50 volunteers and a board of 10 members supporting the overall management of the organization as well as program delivery.
