StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto-January 21, 2011: Film: Dhobi Ghat
Director: Kiran Rao
Cast: Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Kriti Malhotra, Monica Dogra
Rating: ***
Kiran Rao with her directorial debut Dhobi Ghat has immensely tried to discover the city of Mumbai in a totally different way through four main characters of the movie. Each of the characters are different from each other with different background and profession but they get connected somehow throughout the story.
Aamir Khan as an artist named Arun has given a deep feel like an art film, Pratiek Babbar as the washerman (dhobi) gives yet another quality performance, Monica Dogra as an NRI investment banker Shai returns to Mumbai for a change of pace and Kriti Malhotra as young married Muslim girl Yasmin, whose video diaries are discovered by Arun.
Munna has a deep aspiration to become an actor and befriends Shai, who helps him making his profile. In return, he helps her to discover the real city of Mumbai. They develop a unique friendship and Munna starts feeling for her.
Oscar winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla has scored some beautiful notes on the way of discovering the city. The title theme will especially keep you glued.
Starting from the dhobi ghat to posh art galleries and the narrow gullies in slums, the movie discovers almost every part of the city. The story is capturing but little slow sometimes but definitely a wonderful effort by a debutant director. So, you can definitely go for watching the movie this weekend.
