Rabindranath Tagore's 'Nouka Dubi' To Be Revisited By Rituparno Ghosh & Subhash Ghai!

StarBuzz Weekly, Toronto- November 29, 2010 : What do you get when you bring together a legend like Rabindranath Tagore and stalwarts like Subhash Ghai and Rituparno Ghosh? The answer is Naukadubi, a Hindi and Bengali bilingual venture. After giving beautiful gems like Iqbal and Joggers' Park, Ghai with his Mukta Searchlight Films, wants to take good Bengali cinema on a global scale.

And for that he is teaming up with the 10 time National Award winner and one of the most important directors of Indian Cinema Rituparno Ghosh to relive the magical imagery of  Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore with Naukadubi. The film is mainstream make over of Ghosh's film by the same title and is the tale of four cross-wired lovers.

Not just the director but the star cast also includes reputed names like Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Raima Sen and Riya Sen. Insiders who have seen the rushes of the film claim that no doubt that Prosenjit, Jisshu Sengupta and Raima are proven performers, but Riya Sen is a complete revelation. This film will be a benchmark and a turning point in her career!

Just like all great films must, this one will also  captivate the audience and transports them to a sublime world and allows you to enter the lives of other people. The film leaves you richer for the experience of having watched it. Though it's is all set for a theatrical release in January 2011, it will premiere at IFFI, Goa. To give proof of its importance, it will be screened at the World Premiere which is the main attraction of the festival. It will be the opening Film of the India Premier Section on 24th November to mark the Nobel Laureate Tagore's 150th anniversary. The entire cast, Producer, director and crew will attend the screening that is being held for select audience that includes the Indian and world media.

Nouka Dubi will gain much attention for its content that was considered rather broadminded and progressive during Tagore's time. All these years later, the film will be a progressive Bollywood-style story from 'Galpa Cuccha' (Collection of Stories published in 1912).

Emphasizing on the fact that it's an important film, Ghosh says: “The idea of making a film on Noukadubi germinated while we were shooting for Abohoman. I would discuss with Titoda (Dipankar De) if there’s any place for Bengali literature in popular cinema because there’s a tendency to classify any literature-based film as an art film. Noukadubi has to be seen from the point of that period’s conventional morality. Chastity plays a major role in the film. Morality is very important. A new bride who has lived with another man over a period of time returns to her husband. I felt Noukadubi has all the ingredients of a mainstream, rather popular, film. It’s basically a tale of wife-swapping — a couple is separated and there’s a lot of melodrama. Noukadubi won’t have the complicated narrative of a Chokher Bali.”
Noukadaubi is slated for release in Bengali and Hindi in January 2011.
