In Vedic astrology the zodiac sign or Rashi is determined by the placement of moon in your horoscope unlike western astrology which goes by the placement of sun. If the moon is in Virgo then your rashi is Virgo even if you are born in January. This may seem a little confusing to you but the system is far more accurate in predictions. Each horoscope is made by the meridian you are born, time and date. So when we make individual horoscope, it is customized. That means two people born on the same date, month and year will have different rashis and hence different destinies. Instead of classifying all human beings in to twelve zodiac signs, Vedic astrology lays emphasis on each individual.

Still there are some similarities as far as the 12 signs are concerned. Each
 zodiacal sign has certain peculiarities and characteristics. For example, each sign represents some element in nature, such as fire, earth and water.

 

Signs are also divided on the basis of moving, fixed and dual characteristics. Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are movable signs. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are fixed signs and Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Aquarius are dual signs.

Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius are odd signs and Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are even signs. All odd signs are said to be cruel and masculine while as all even signs are mild and feminine.

Signs are further divided into fiery, airy, watery or earthy signs. Aries Leo and Sagittarius are fiery or Agnitatva signs. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earthy or Bhutatva signs. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are airy or Vayutatva signs and finally Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are called watery or jal tatva signs.

Each of these classifications has important role in studying the horoscope of an individual. Accurate prediction takes into account many things apart from these. We will discuss those later in this column.
