Venezuela has won the Miss Universe contest for the second year running after 18-year Stefania Fernandez clinched the crown

Venezuela has won the Miss Universe contest for the second year running after 18-year Stefania Fernandez clinched the crown.

Fernandez was given the crown by her compatriot Dayana Mendoza, who won the competition last year.
"We Venezuelans never tire. We made history today," Mendoza said later.
"It was almost impossible, but Stefania did an excellent job."
It was Venezuela's sixth Miss Universe crown in the 59-year history of the pageant.

However, Fernandez's main role will be to travel the globe as an advocate for HIV/Aids education, research and legislation.
Two other young women from Latin America made it into the top five: 23-year-old Ada de la Cruz of the Dominican Republic and Mayra Matos, 20, of Puerto Rico.
The final five also included contestants from Australia and Kosovo.

American police needs a crash course in "General Knowledge"? -Tia Virdi

Add Image

Who are you "Bob Dylan"?? Who are you "Shahrukh Khan"??
NJ police want to see some IDs. Looks like the American authorities and cops should take a crash course in General Knowledge and with a special attention to the 'Who's who' section.

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey.
One of India's most famous film stars, Shahrukh Khan, was detained and questioned by immigration officials at a US airport for more than two hours.

Mrs. Pakistan World 2009 – Sana Mushtaq

How does it feel being the next Mrs. Pakistan World?

Wow!!! It’s an amazing feeling. I am still overjoyed with the final results.

Tell us a little about yourself and your hobbies.

I have 5 other siblings, 2 older and the rest younger. Ever since I remember, I have dreamed of being a Police officer. I got married in 2004 and have 2 children. I enjoy dancing, working out, listening to music, and spending time with my family.

How is family life, tell us a bit about your husband and children?

Family life is good, challenging every step of the way but priceless. My husband Junaid Javed is a sweet heart, very outgoing person, and love to travel, positive attitude and very supportive. We have two children Adaa and Rayhan. Adaa is almost 3 years of age and Rayhan is 17 months. Since I'm a stay home mom they keep me busy. It’s hard raising two small children specially so close in age. I always wanted to spend as much time as I can with them before I go back to work.

Pakistan is in a lot of political and military turmoil, how as Mrs. Pakistan would you help ease such tensions amongst people about Pakistan?

We all have to work together to resolve issues. Pakistan is a very beautiful country that has the potential to come out of his turmoil with the help of its loyal people. I as Mrs. Pakistan will try my level best to cause awareness against terrorism.

Pakistan has been in the news in a very solid way since last year, as a Mrs. Pakistan what’s your insight in Politics?

I am hoping the politicians of Pakistan work together in resolving these issues, and think of their people not themselves.

Your message to the other married Pakistani women.

Besides being a mother, and a wife we are still part of the society. I believe in setting goals for yourself and working towards them.

I guess this year has been lucky for you! What are you planning for this long year now that you are Mrs. Pakistan World 2009?

Yes, Mashallah the year has been lucky for this and many more reasons. I haven't set any goals as of yet because it’s all so fresh but I do look forward to representing Pakistan at international level and to the best to my ability.

The concept of married women becoming beauty queens is a very slow growing concept. Where would you want to see your country Pakistan in the next 5 years in beauty pageants?

I believe 5 years is not a long time for this kind of transaction, but every bit counts. Its a dream to win international pageant and u never know, what the future holds. Pakistani's got talent but are hesitant to show it

You are an achiever, and have gone down in history as the third crowned Mrs. Pakistan World, how does your family feel?

Actually to be every honest, they didn't know it was that big of a deal. My parents thought it was one of the local pageants and I won, until I explained to them, overall they are happy and very supportive of me and that’s what matters the most.

How would you describe the situation of Pakistani women in today's world?
Pakistani women have changed for better over the years. Today they are modern, self confident, well educated, and with good careers

You represent the modern side of Pakistan and Pakistani women. How do you think the majority of the community will react to the crowning of the third Mrs. Pakistan World in history?
I believe our Pakistani community will be happier to see a young Pakistani mother and a wife represent her country. I hope this motivates other women to participate in future pageants.

A modern image of Pakistan is very necessary for Pakistan. In the past 10 years Pakistan has gone through a change and has now come to maintain a bit of modernity. How do you think your contributions will affect Pakistan and its image? (Please do not talk about charities).
With my eastern and western values as a Canadian/Pakistani woman, my thought and ideas would have somewhat of an impact, as I have strong communication skills in both languages, I am a self starter and curious to hear and see how Pakistan has changed, not only as a growing modern society but how it has changed the lives of people of all ages. My experience can be very helpful whether speaking both languages, translating for education, helping seniors, speaking to school age children about their future and even counseling for students who wish to study aboard. My thoughts and my actions are yet to grow with this wonderful opportunity. I have two children of my own and want to give them the best future and education possible. I want them to learn the values and know their heritage, roots and most of all the culture they belong too.

As a woman and mother and wife, what advise do you have for those women who are struggling to come out of the male dominated society?
Believe in yourself, when there is a will, there's a way.

LISA RAY - The internationally acclaimed actressIn an exclusive tete-e-tete with Tia Virdi of StarBuzzLisa Ray was born in Toronto, Canada to a Bengali Indian father and a Polish mother and grew up in the suburb of Etobicoke, Toronto. She excelled academically, doing five years of high school in four. She spoke Polish to her maternal grandmother and watched movies of Federico Fellini and Satyajit Ray with her cinephile dad. Ray was spotted by an agent in a crowd during a family vacation in India when she was 16, when she began modelling.

Her first assignment was for Bombay Dyeing and then she went on to the front page of Glad Rags. She has never looked back once she got a break in to films. Incidentally her first foray into films was a Tamil movie called ‘Nethaji’ with Sharath Kumar in 1994.

Her Bollywood career started with ‘Kasoor’ in 2001. She then got a chance to work with the famed Deepa Mehta in Bollywood Hollywood and Water .Lisa Ray has been featured in the Canadian edition of Hello magazine as one of the '50 Most Beautiful People' of the country.

Here goes the chat:How are you liking Masala Mehndi Masti? It’s really cool. I’m liking it very much. I am honoured to be here. What kind of works are we going to be seeing you in?I’m working on a few movies that will come out soon. Most don’t have any South Asian context The list is online on imdb.com. (Trader Games, Defender, Let The Game Begin, Somnolence etc)Is there anybody in particular you would like to work with?I don’t really define it that way. I’m very open. A great actor is someone who is dedicated to their craft, that’s all. That’s all that matters. I get along in anyway with a variety of people. So there is no one person.

In the past has there been a project that has been special to you?Yes, definitely Water. It has been the most significant film of my career so far. Also because I really value Deepa Mehta. As a director and as a friend and as a mentor. It’s just one of those really special experiences. Everything just worked. We also had an amazing time shooting the film. I am very very proud to have been a part of it. World unseen was also something that has been very close to me. I do like films that are challenging, not to say that I don’t enjoy light films or commercial films.

I just recently shot an episode of psyche, which is really popular in the US. But yeah I am definitely more into intense work. What are your opinions about the kind of work MMM is doing in the GTA for the South Asian community?Well they are really doing amazing work. I really admire the dedication of Abhishek and Jyoti, I am really honoured to be here, I’m being honoured by the festival. I think it’s about celebrating the community. It’s giving us a chance to dissolve boundaries.
